On September 23, 1922, the Legislative Sejm of the Republic of Poland passed an act on the creation of the port in Gdynia. The resolution was a confirmation of the will of the Polish nation, which, although in the Treaty of Versailles, received access to the Baltic Sea, but without a port, which was necessary for the development of the state. Bearing in mind this important and round anniversary, the authors of the article decided to recall the most important circumstances and figures related to the construction of the port and the city of Gdynia. The article contains a historical outline of Gdynia, reminding that the first historical mention of it dates back to 1253. However, a lot of space was devoted to people, including the originator of the location of the Polish port in Gdynia, engineer Tadeusz Wenda. And also to Minister Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski, who throughout all the years of free Poland – the Second Polish Republic – consistently supported this great investment. At the end of the article you can find references to contemporary Gdynia. A city that is now known in Poland not only as an undoubted success of interwar Poland, but above all as one of the most beautiful and most liveable places in our country. The presented article is also a contribution to the image of the history of the construction of Gdynia in the school textbook narrative.
