Abstract The relationship between the field of training -university- and the working environment is absolutely essential. The university must train its students to satisfy the needs of society, to build knowledge and to develop critical thinking but it cannot elude the commitment to prepare competent professionals. This paper shows the growing interest in researching on the labour insertion of graduates. The concept of competence is analysed and the differences between generic and specific competences are studied. The generic or transversal competences proposed by the Tuning project and other studies are delimited. Such competences, considered as key competences for employment, are contrasted with the data from an investigation that aimed to establish the profile of excellent university students. It is found that most of these skills are integrated into this profile. Working in the university to develop excellence also allows us to develop competences for employment.
