From 2008, the french Ministry of Labour has promoted several reforms which claim to be social democracy. The use of the indefinite and polisemic notion refers to the regulation of social relationships at work (or “industrial relations”). The paper focuses the development of these relations from the 19th century, through the recognition by the State of trade unions. Then, it asks the notion of “social democracy” and its current perspectives or limits.
