description

The representatives of the liturgical movement knew that the renewal of the religious life of the faithful required a proper definition of the essence of the liturgy and of what the Church is. Then, they not only distanced themselves from the rubricist view of the liturgy, but also developed its new understanding and the importance of the faithful's active participation in celebrations. This study attempts to demonstrate the Silesian liturgical movement through the prism of Fr Stanislaus Stephan's activity and his collaboration with the Benedictines from Krzeszów, with emphasis on the importance of liturgical singing in the celebrations of the Church. What is distinctive about the activity of this Silesian pioneer of the liturgical movement is not only his very impressive activity in the field of reaching outthe faithful with liturgical texts, but also his insistence that, despite the permission of the Apostolic See, chants performed in the mother tongue should not be permanently introduced at the expense of Latin liturgical chanting. If the preservation of Gregorian chanting was not possible, in order to preserve the integrity of the liturgy he recommended the selection of such Mass hymns whose content was related to a particular feast or liturgical period.
