Plant colonization of a bare peat surface: population changes and spatial patterns

1992

. Changes in size and spatial arrangement of plant populations established on an initially bare peat surface were described over a period of 5 yr by following plant individuals on a 1-cm grid in an area of 10 m x 25 m. The spatial pattern of populations and association between species was analyzed statistically. The study site was very slowly colonized by 14 perennial plant species. The early successional stage was dominated by Carex rostrata, with a clumped spatial distribution, and the homogeneously distributed Eriophorum vaginatum and Pinus sylvestris. Both the growth in size of populations and changes in their spatial distribution were interpreted as a result of species dispersal abilit…

Exploring the chemical diversity of essential oils in Armenian markets: a comprehensive analysis of composition profiles

2023

Due to its location at the convergence of multiple biogeographical regions, Armenia experiences significant variations in climate and soil conditions, resulting in a diverse range of plant chemotypes. However, there has been a lack of recent reports on the biological activity of plants found in Armenia's flora. There are few with well-described essential oil profiles, despite the vast biodiversity of Armenian flora. This study aimed to analyse the chemical composition of essential oils used by the population and found in the Armenian market. Unfortunately, only essential oils of foreign origin can be found, like Russia. Three essential oils of Lavandula angustifolia, Abies sibirica, and Ros…

Tamarins are a distinct group of small sized New World monkeys with complex phylogenetic relationships and poorly studied cytogenetic traits. In this study, we applied molecular cytogenetic analyses by fluorescence in situ hybridization with probes specific for telomeric sequences and ribosomal DNA loci after DAPI/CMA3 staining on metaphases from five tamarin species, namely Leontocebus fuscicollis, Leontopithecus rosalia, Saguinus geoffroyi, Saguinus mystax and Saguinus oedipus, with the aim to investigate the distribution of repetitive sequences and their possible role in genome evolution. Our analyses revealed that all five examined species show similar karyotypes, 2n = 46, which differ …

Mitochondrial Dna Variation in Rhopalosiphum padi (Homoptera: Aphididae) Populations from four Spanish Localities

1992

In total, 35 clones of the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) established from samples collected in four distant localities of Spain during fall 1989 and spring 1990 were examined for mitochondrial DNA variation using 20 restriction endonucleases. Individual parthenogenetic adults were used to establish clonal lines on wheat (‘Talento’) seedlings. Restriction site polymorphism was detected only with endonuclease Rsa I, but no statistical treatment of data could be done until more polymorphic endonucleases are found. Length variation of the mitochondrial DNA molecule, however, was extensive among R. padi clones. Distribution among populations of this size polymorphism was used to…

Development of “universal” gene-specific markers from Malus spp. cDNA sequences, their mapping and use in synteny studies within Rosaceae

2009

The Rosaceae contains many economically valuable crop genera, including Malus (apple), Fragaria (strawberry), and Prunus (stone fruit). There has been increasing interest in the development of linkage maps for these species, with a view to marker-assisted selection to assist breeding programs and, recently, in the development of transferable markers to permit syntenic comparisons of maps of different rosaceous genera. In this investigation, a set of Malus cDNA sequences were downloaded from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory database. The sequences were aligned with homologous full-length Arabidopsis genomic DNA sequences to identify putative intron–exon junctions and conserved flank…

A genetic linkage map ofPhysocarpus, a member of the Spiraeoideae (Rosaceae), based on RAPD, AFLP, RGA, SSR and gene specific markers

2008

Physocarpus opulifolius is a deciduous shrub native to North America belonging to the Spiraeoideae subfamily of the Rosaceae. The cultivars 'Luteus' and 'Diabolo' are grown in gardens for their ornamental foliage, golden and purple respectively. We developed a linkage map of P. opulifolius with a view to detecting markers for the leaf colour genes, which are under major gene control. A total of 162 molecular markers (128 RAPDs, 27 AFLPs, three RGA, three STS markers and one SSR) and the leaf colour genes Pur and Aur were scored in the Physocarpus progeny and used to create a linkage map covering 586.1 cM over nine linkage groups. There was an average of 18.2 markers per linkage group and a …
