Gjennom intervjuer med tre frilans trommeslagere har forfatteren forsøkt å avdekke deres kilder til motivasjon for egenutvikling og det å dedikere sitt liv til musikken. Det fremkom flere faktorer, og mest sentralt stod samspill med andre musikere.
