Atypical Pleomorphic Extraosseous Ewing Tumor/Peripheral Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor with Unusual Phenotypic/Genotypic Profile

2002

A pleomorphic undifferentiated tumor primarily located in the retroperitoneum with a phenotype compatible with an extraosseous Ewing tumor/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ET/pPNET) pattern and unusual molecular features is described. Immunohistochemically, HBA-71 (CD99/mic2) and several neural markers were intensively expressed together with scattered cells expressing carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Short-term culture showed biphasic neuroblastic and epithelioid cell populations, with the latter expressing germ cell markers (CEA, alpha-fetoprotein, and the beta-subunit of chorionic gonadotrophin). Conventional cytogenetics displayed several chromosomic rearrangements, especially…

Alpha-amylase serum levels in professional soccer players are not related with physical fitness.

2017

Backgorund Recent evidence has showed that serum or salivary values of α-amylase predict endurance running performance. In this study we investigate whether serum α-amylase concentration may be associated with training status during a competitive season and after a detraining period in professional soccer players. Methods The study population consisted in 15 male professional soccer players from an Italian major league team (age [mean±SD] 27±5 years, weight 76.9±4.1 kg, height 1.82±0.05 m). Serum α-amylase levels were measured 3 times during the last part of a competitive season (January, March and May) and just before preseason training (July). Results Metabolic and cardiovascular fitness …

21-Hydroxylase and 11beta-hydroxylase mutations in Romanian patients with classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

2005

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) comprises autosomal recessive disorders mainly due to defects in the 21-hydroxylase (CYP21) gene. The study aimed to perform molecular characterization in 43 Romanian patients with classical CAH forms diagnosed at the Center for Genetic Diseases of the Pediatric Clinic/University Cluj (38 with 21-hydroxylase deficiency, five with 11beta-hydroxylase deficiency), to determine the frequency of mutations in the CYP21A2 gene and attempt a genotype-phenotype correlation in patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency.Molecular analysis was performed by direct sequencing of PCR amplified products of the CYP21A2 and CYP11B1 genes. The most frequent mutation in Romanian…

Deletion of Chromosome 11q Predicts Response to Anthracycline-Based Chemotherapy in Early Breast Cancer

2007

Abstract Despite the recent consensus on the eligibility of adjuvant systemic therapy in patients with lymph node–negative breast cancer (NNBC) based on clinicopathologic criteria, specific biological markers are needed to predict sensitivity to the different available therapeutic options. We examined the feasibility of developing a genomic predictor of chemotherapy response and recurrence risk in 185 patients with NNBC using assembled arrays containing 2,460 bacterial artificial chromosome clones for scanning the genome for DNA copy number changes. After surgery, 90 patients received anthracycline-based chemotherapy, whereas 95 did not. Tamoxifen was administered to patients with hormone r…

Risk estimation in localized unresectable single copy MYCN neuroblastoma by the status of chromosomes 1p and 11q

2006

In localized neuroblastoma, the identification of patients requiring intensive treatment is still difficult. We retrospectively analyzed data of 280 single copy MYCN stage 2 and 3 neuroblastoma patients with gross residual tumor after initial surgery. The 3-year-event free survival of the total group was 83+/-2%, and 3-year-overall survival was 92+/-2%. Patients < or=1.5 years had a better outcome than older children. Deletions/imbalances of chromosome 1p were found in 9/90 patients and were associated with a higher event rate but not with a higher death rate. Aberrations of chromosome 11q in 14/91 patients were correlated with a higher event and death rate. Multivariate analysis identified…

Effect of childhood developmental coordination disorder on adulthood physical activity; Arvo Ylppö longitudinal study

2022

Publisher Copyright: © 2022 The Authors. Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science In Sports published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Individuals at risk of Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) have low levels of physical activity in childhood due to impaired motor competence; however, physical activity levels in adulthood have not been established. This study sought to determine the impact of DCD risk on physical activity levels in adults using accelerometry measurement. Participants (n = 656) from the Arvo Ylppö Longitudinal Study cohort had their motor competence assessed at the age of five years, and their physical activity quantified via device assessment at the age of 25 years. Betwe…

Comparison of the immunogenicity and safety ofCervarix™ andGardasil®human papillomavirus (HPV) cervical cancer vaccines in healthy women aged 18–45 y…

2009

This observer-blind study compared the prophylactic human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines, Cervarix (GlaxoSmithKline) and Gardasil (Merck), by assessing immunogenicity and safety through one month after completion of the three-dose vaccination course. Women (n = 1106) were stratified by age (18-26, 27-35, 36-45 years) and randomized (1:1) to receive Cervarix (Months 0, 1, 6) or Gardasil (Months 0, 2, 6). At Month 7 after first vaccination, all women in the according-to-protocol cohort who were seronegative/DNA negative before vaccination for the HPV type analyzed had seroconverted for HPV-16 and HPV-18 serum neutralizing antibodies, as measured by pseudovirion-based neutralization assay (PBNA…

Cytogenetics, flow cytometry, cytophotometry and morphometry of 22 cases of primary breast carcinoma. A comparative study.

1992

Cytogenetic, flow cytometric, cytophotometric and morphometric analyses were performed on 22 previously untreated, primary solid breast carcinomas. Although the cell nuclei as the primary object of these studies were the same in all the tumors, distinct features were evaluated in each case to determine to what degree the results obtained by these techniques are comparable. From the cytogenetic viewpoint, six tumors had a modal number in the diploid range, seven were in the triploid range, and two in the tetraploid range; seven tumors had no modal number. These data correlate with the flow cytometry and cytophotometry results obtained, with DNA values slightly higher than their respective ch…

Aldosterone synthase activity in the Y-1 adrenal cell line.

1995

The Y-1 adrenal cell line was shown to produce 20 alpha-dihydroaldosterone from deoxycorticosterone. This compound was identified by GC-MS by comparison with the previously synthesized reference compound. Two other 18-hydroxylated metabolites were identified as 11 beta,18-dihydroxy-20 alpha-dihydroprogesterone from endogenous cholesterol and 18-hydroxy-20 alpha-dihydro-11-dehydrocorticosterone from DOC. The conditions necessary for the synthesis of these compounds are culturing in 20% serum-supplemented medium and repeated incubations with the substrate. The production of 11 beta-hydroxylated steroids and that of 18-oxygenated steroids is stimulated differently by ACTH and angiotensin II su…
