A molecular phylogeny of bullfinches Pyrrhula Brisson, 1760 (Aves: Fringillidae)

2011

Abstract We present a molecular phylogeny of bullfinches (Pyrrhula Brisson, 1760) based on 2357 bp DNA sequence information of mitochondrial genes (cyt-b, 16S rRNA) and nuclear introns (fib-7, GAPDH-11). The genus is clearly a monophyletic group. Within the limits of Pyrrhula, molecular methods support the subdivision of three main groups: (1) “Southeast-Asian bullfinches” (P. nipalensis and P. leucogenis), (2) “Himalayan bullfinches” (P. aurantiaca, P. erythaca, P. erythrocephala), and (3) “Eurasian bullfinches” (P. pyrrhula s.l.). Within the last group there are four different subgroups: (3a) P. (p.) murina, (3b) P. (p.) cineracea, (3c) P. (p.) griseiventris, and (3d) P. pyrrhula s.str. T…

Search for eccentric binary black hole mergers with advanced LIGO and advanced Virgo during their first and second observing runs

2019

When formed through dynamical interactions, stellar-mass binary black holes may retain eccentric orbits ($e>0.1$ at 10 Hz) detectable by ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. Eccentricity can therefore be used to differentiate dynamically-formed binaries from isolated binary black hole mergers. Current template-based gravitational-wave searches do not use waveform models associated to eccentric orbits, rendering the search less efficient to eccentric binary systems. Here we present results of a search for binary black hole mergers that inspiral in eccentric orbits using data from the first and second observing runs (O1 and O2) of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. The search uses min…

Orationes tres

1594

Mollīna tipogrāfijā nodrukātas Orationes tres: trīs runas, ko turēja sholarhi (Rīgas rātes prokonsuls Nikolajs Eke; 1541-1623 un sindiks Dāvids Hilhens; 1561-1610) un Domskolas rektors Johans Rīvijs (Rivius, 1528-1596, Domskolas rektors (1589) un inspektors (1594)) reorganizētās Domskolas atjaunošanai veltītajā svinīgajā pasākumā 1589. gada 15. jūlijā. Vairāki grāmatas eksemplāri bija domāti dāvināšanai ievērojamām Rīgas personām, tāpēc iesieti grezni: brūnā ādā, ar Rīgas ģerboni zelta iespiedumā uz vāka. Runu tekstus papildina tabulas, kur fiksēts visu triju skolas klašu stundu plāni. Runu izdošana un iespiešana ilga četrus gadus. Izdevums kavējās dēļ burtstabiņu trūkuma grieķu teksta iesp…

Large Blooms of

2018

ABSTRACT Biological soil crusts (biocrusts) account for a substantial portion of primary production in dryland ecosystems. They successionally mature to deliver a suite of ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration, water retention and nutrient cycling, and climate regulation. Biocrust assemblages are extremely well adapted to survive desiccation and to rapidly take advantage of the periodic precipitation events typical of arid ecosystems. Here we focus on the wetting response of incipient cyanobacterial crusts as they mature from “light” to “dark.” We sampled a cyanobacterial biocrust chronosequence before (dry) and temporally following a controlled wetting event and used high-throug…

Vibrio agarivorans sp. nov., a novel agarolytic marine bacterium.

2002

It is proposed that the new Vibrio species Vibrio agarivorans accommodates two agarolytic, halophilic, fermentative bacterial strains isolated from Mediterranean sea water. The cells were gram-negative, oxidase-positive, polarly flagellated bacilli that fermented glucose without gas production and that produced no decarboxylases. They used a wide range of compounds as sole carbon and energy sources. The DNA G+C content was 44.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on complete 16S and 23S rDNA sequences revealed that the strains belong to the gamma-Proteobacteria, and are specifically related to Vibrio species. Their nearest relatives were species of the Vibrio fischeri group, sharing 16S rDNA …

Plant-associated microbiota as a source of antagonistic bacteria against the phytopathogen Erwinia amylovora.

2022

Control of bacterial plant diseases is a major concern, as they affect economically important species and spread easily, such as the case of fire blight of rosaceous caused by Erwinia amylovora. In the search for alternatives to the use of agrochemicals and antibiotics, this work presents a screening of natural bacterial antagonists of this relevant and devastating phytopathogen. We recovered bacterial isolates from different plant tissues and geographical origins and then selected those with the strongest ability to reduce fire blight symptoms ex vivo and remarkable in vitro antagonistic activity against E. amylovora. None of them elicited a hypersensitivity reaction in tobacco leaves, mos…
