History and Environmental Impact of Mining Activity in Celtic Aeduan Territory Recorded in a Peat Bog (Morvan, France)

2003

The present study aims to document historical mining and smelting activities by means of geochemical and pollen analyses performed in a peat bog core collected around the Bibracte oppidum (Morvan, France), the largest settlement of the great Aeduan Celtic tribe (ca. 180 B.C. to 25 A.D.). The anthropogenic Pb profile indicates local mining operations starting from the Late Bronze Age, ca. cal. 1300 B.C. Lead inputs peaked at the height of Aeduan civilization and then decreased after the Roman conquest of Gaul, when the site was abandoned. Other phases of mining are recognized from the 11th century to modern times. They have all led to modifications in plant cover, probably related in part to…

IL VICERÉ GARÇIA DE TOLEDO E I CANTIERI REALI. UN LOGGIATO “ALLA GENOVESE” PER PALERMO

2014

The State Archive of Genoa keeps one of the few drawings related to the reconfiguration projects of the Royal Palace of Palermo in modern age. It's a pen drawing, partly in watercolor, depicting partially the front and the pavement of a long open gallery to be realized in the new eastern façade of the palace; the plan is attached to the contract, signed March 14th 1567 in Genoa, where the sculptors Giacomo Guidetti and Antonio Carabio were commissioned to supply all the necessary marbles and floor surfaces to realize the loggia.

Obesity in Aging and Art

2009

THIS issue of Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences highlights new findings on obesity in older persons and its consequences for health and function (1,2,3). The obesity epidemic is spreading rapidly in both developed and developing countries, and perspectives on the negative effects of overweight and obesity abound in recent medical literature. What do we know so far about obesity over the lifetime? Obesity does not spare older persons (4). Obese older persons experience a wide range of negative consequences, including metabolic abnormalities, arthritis, pulmonary diseases, cataracts, cancer, impaired mobility, disability, and mortality. Given the already extensive knowledge base, why a…

2013

In 1620, was named chief pilot of the Casa de Contratación de Sevilla Diego Ramírez de Arellano, author of a manuscript entitled Reconocimiento de los estrechos de Magallanes y San Vicente, con algunas cosas curiosas de navegación. He had participated in the reconnaissance mission referred by the title of the manuscript, and in that book developed same methods and tools for a nautical understood scientifically, and even used a methodology close to modern science, as in refuting the theory about Figueiredo of the linear relationship between longitude and magnetic variation of the needle navigation. This article is based on some conclusions that can get an analysis of the manuscript. It focus…

The discovery of stapes

2013

Giovanni Filippo Ingrassia revisited and redefined some of Galeno's reports, and was recognized as one of the leading Italian Physicians of the 16th century. Ingrassia principally studied the skull, and gave very important contributions to otorhinolaryngology, including the discovery of the stapes. He also isolated the inferior nasal concha from the maxillary bone, described the frontal sinus, the pterygopalatine fossa and several foramina of the skull. Ingrassia firstly attributed a sensorial function to the middle ear bones, which he called fifth particular function. He also added some details to the description of the VIII cranial nerve, which introduces the concept of bone conducting so…

History of bioavailable lead and iron in the Greater North Sea and Iceland during the last millennium – A bivalve sclerochronological reconstruction

2014

We present the first annually resolved record of biologically available Pb and Fe in the Greater North Sea and Iceland during 1040-2004 AD based on shells of the long-lived marine bivalve Arctica islandica. The iron content in pre-industrial shells from the North Sea largely remained below the detection limit. Only since 1830, shell Fe levels rose gradually reflecting the combined effect of increased terrestrial runoff of iron-bearing sediments and eutrophication. Although the lead gasoline peak of the 20th century was well recorded by the shells, bivalves that lived during the medieval heyday of metallurgy showed four-fold higher shell Pb levels than modern specimens. Presumably, pre-indus…

Nuove riflessioni sul canone teatrale del madrigale drammatico

2012

The article deals with some case studies on theatrical spectacles with music, as the “mascherate” composed by Orazio Vecchi in Modena. Further, it examines some excerpts of the sixteenth-century Italian polyphony, which have not written for the stage, thus recreating the musical landscape inspired by popular songs and the onomatopoeic lexicon drawn from pastoral dramas and comedies before Vecchi’s "Amphiparnaso" (1597). In the second part, applying the criteria of narratology, the author analyses the works of Alessandro Striggio ("Il cicalamento delle donne al bucato", 1567), Gaspare Torelli ("I fidi amanti", 1600) and Adriano Banchieri ("La pazzia senile", 1607 2edn., "La prudenza giovenil…
