2021

The contribution analyzes two drawings from a project by Giovanni Amico (1733) for the Benedictine library of the monastic complex of San Martino delle Scale, near Palermo, whose construction has undergone successive transformations. The models pursued by the architect from Trapani confirm his interests and the interference of the client, both aimed at the production from beyond the Alps at the time of the Habsburg domination of the island.

Charles Nodier, Trilogie écossaise

2013

Charles Nodier’s summer ambulations through Scotland in 1821 were to spawn a genre: the romantic travelogue. The reader is invited on a journey through age-old legends and oneiric cartography, through the fogs of ancient Caledonia and modern Scotland, and into the land of goblins and fairies.

Parental effects on offspring longevity--evidence from 17th to 19th century reproductive histories.

2004

Family studies provide support for a modest genetic influence on offspring life span, although the magnitude of these correlations is small. The study aimed to clarify the relative contributions of parental age at birth and overall parental longevity on offspring lifespan, and to identify the biological and cultural mechanisms.Information was derived from two village genealogies (1650-1927) encompassing 9979 births (5315 males, 4664 females). Data selection was guided by the inclusion of information about parental age at birth and lifespan, offspring lifespan and cohort-specific life expectancy.Parental age at reproduction displayed a negative association with offspring survivability, which …

Bayesian modeling of the evolution of male height in 18th century Finland from incomplete data.

2012

Abstract Data on army recruits’ height are frequently available and can be used to analyze the economics and welfare of the population in different periods of history. However, such data are not a random sample from the whole population at the time of interest, but instead is skewed since the short men were less likely to be recruited. In statistical terms this means that the data are left-truncated. Although truncation is well-understood in statistics a further complication is that the truncation threshold is not known, may vary from time to time, and auxiliary information on the threshold is not at our disposal. The advantage of the fully Bayesian approach presented here is that both the …

2021

This contribution is based on the transcription and commentary of a document from the mid-18th century. The dialectic between Andrea Gigante (1731-1787) and a client for a specific service (a project and model of an altar in the church of San Carlo) indirectly reveals the status of social authority achieved in Palermo by the architect.

2019

With the general objective indicated in its title, this work tries to highlight relevant aspects in the continuity of the Spanish domain in the Philippines, dependent on the maintenance of the Spanish capital. The inevitable selection of topics has lead the preferences of this work towards the residents collaboration to defend the city, the conversion of many of them into traders of exotic products and singular slaves owners, and their collaboration to an incredible miscegenation due to the ethnic variety. On the other hand, to follow the footsteps of the first generation of residents in Manila, at the end of the 16th century and during the 17th century, this work gives us some information …

Obrońca honoru rodu Poniatowskich. Rzecz o Józefie Antonim Poniatowskim

2019

The article is a biographical sketch devoted to the figure of Prince Józef Poniatowski (1763–1813). It was created on the occasion of the 210th anniversary of the battle of Raszyn, which took place on April 19, 1809. During this battle Józef Poniatowski impressed both his soldiers and Austrian opponents with extraordinary bravery and heroism. In the same year he received the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor, which was established by Napoleon Bonaparte. Poniatowski said without false modesty that “God has entrusted me with the honor of Poles, I will give him to God.” He was also prophetically saying that “You must die bravely”. He was born in Vienna and raised in a German-speaking environm…

2022

This article presents four engravings that bear witness to the most significant stages of the celebrations organised in Catania for the funeral of the Prince of Biscari, Ignazio Paternò Castello, on 2 September 1786. This graphic corpus constitutes the last opportunity to celebrate the prince’s memory and prominence based on the models established by European courts, but at the same time it reveals more recondite aspects of the research into phenomena of emulation in architecture and self-representation that have not emerged to date from studies on the aristocrat from Catania and that reflect above all the way of life of a cultured personality driven by great ambitions. The aim of the resea…
