Ręka, noga, mózg na ścianie, czyli ludzkie szczątki jako kurioza w XIX-wiecznych opowieściach grozy
2016
W XIX stuleciu, „wieku przedmiotów”, kolekcjonowanie ludzkich szczątków, stanowiące przejaw chęci poznania tajemnic człowieka, nic należy do rzadkości. Zakonserwowane w różny sposób fragmenty ludzkiego ciała stanowią również powtarzający się element popularnego nurtu opowieści grozy. W okresie romantyzmu stanowią one jeden z ważnych elementów cudowności, skupiając na sobie narrację i prowokując kolejne niezwykłe wydarzenia (Stopa mumii Theophile’a Gautiera). W ujęciu pozytywistyczno-naturalistycznym wprowadzają element niezwykłości do scjentystyczncgo dyskursu o święcie (Ręka Guy de Maupassanta). Z kolei w tekstach późniejszych, w kontekście okultyzmu i surrealistycznej fantastyki, świadczą…

Teodor Llorente, escriptor valencià
2007
This article is a revision of Teodor Llorente’s literary work in Catalan, in prose and in poetry, which turns out to be an exceptional production for his time, in accordance with his role as a leader and an ideologist of the Valencian Renaixença, and places him as the poet who contributes most, both in quantity and quality, to this literary movement. The first part of the article, focused on his lyric poetry, revises the six editions of his verses which were published between 1885 and 1983, and brings back to life ‘unknown’ poems -unpublished or dispersed- which have never been included in any edition. The second part lists and catalogues his prose writings in Catalan and dismantles the bel…
Looking for an Order of Things: Textbooks and Chemical Classifications in Nineteenth Century France
2002
The purpose of this paper is to reconsider the issue of the creativity of textbook writing by exploring the links between nineteenth-century French textbooks and the quest for a classification of elements. The first section presents the elegant combination of didactic and chemical constraints invented by eighteenth-century chemists: the order of learning - from the known to the unknown - and the order of things - from the simple to the complex - were one and the same. In section two we argue that the alleged coincidence did not help the authors of elementary textbooks required for the new schools set up by the French revolution. Hence the variety of classifications adopted in the early nine…

His career spanned over 45 years, beginning in Verona and continuing to Prague and Vienna. He was an author of several innovative books and scientific articles regarding micro- and macroscopic anatomy. In addition, he received numerous recognitions and prizes for his work, making him an essential figure in the med…
The Origins of Oncological Pancreatic Surgery in Spain. A Tribute to Pioneers
2016
Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is a very complex operation. Its development took place very slowly at the most prestigious centers in the world. The aim of this investigation is to know who were the first surgeons to perform a PD in Spain as well as its historical circumstances. Despite all kinds of difficulties and very few resources, the first PD in Spain were carried out in Barcelona at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau where from the mid-50s a school of gastrointestinal surgery emerged with surgeons soon to become the spearhead of the Spanish surgery and a reference for the whole country: Pi-Figueras, Vicente Artigas, Antonio Soler-Roig and Antonio Llauradó. Almost simultaneously, …

Franz Kuhn, his contribution to anaesthesia and emergency medicine.
2001
Franz Kuhn (1866-1929), a German surgeon, made a significant practical and scientific contribution towards the development of modern anaesthesia and emergency medicine. He developed modern, scientifically based concepts in close correlation to practical inventions for every day use. All of his studies and developments were patient orientated and led to remarkable improvements in patient safety. Kuhn was a major protagonist of endotracheal intubation, perfected his flexo-metallic endotracheal tubes, worked on different techniques of intubating the trachea, applied positive pressure to the lungs during thoracic surgery and developed anaesthesia machines. In the early 20th century, he wrote se…
The short die young: the interrelationship between stature and longevity-evidence from skeletal remains.
2005
It has long been observed that tall people display longer life spans. The current data were employed to verify this association within the bioarchaeological context. To this end, stature and its association with age-at-death were analyzed in a pooled sample of 2,923 skeletons. Height was estimated from proxy indicators based on the maximum length of the humerus, radius, femur, and tibia. Stature estimation followed the procedure outlined by Pearson ([1899] Philos. Trans. R. Soc. Lond. [A] 192:169-244), incorporating minor modifications by Rosing ([ 1988] Handbuch der vergleichenden Biologie des Menschen; Stuttgart: Gustave Fischer, p 586-600). Individual age estimates were classified into t…
