Managing natural disasters, sustaining local development : a problem handled through local community- private organization collaboration? a case stud…

2009

Masteroppgave i development management- Universitetet i Agder 2009 The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) forecasts a future increase of natural disasters and the work to reduce the impacts of such disasters must be escalated. Therefore it seems very important that organisations located in disaster ridden areas, such as the Caribbean, are involved in helping those who are affected by natural disasters. Usually those most affected are the poor and socially disadvantaged groups, meaning support of these peoples are vital for local development. In this thesis proposal I try to link the themes of disaster management and sustainable development, and look at the possibility for…

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and sustainable development : the case of Makonde wood carvers in Mwenge, Dar-es-Salam Tanzania

2009

Masteroppgave i development management- Universitetet i Agder 2009 In recent years we have seen an increase in demand for the wood carvings products especially those made using ‘Mpingo’ tree. The industry has also been a source of employment to the majority of Makonde people and non-Makonde people conducting carving activities. Despite its basic social and economic value, both to the carvers and all those who are engaged in the carving activities, it has been noted however that with increasing demand for the ‘Mpingo’ tree it is likely that the species is might be depleted if strong measures are not taken to assure that the species is sustainably harvested. This study therefore was aimed at …

An assessment of the Samurdhi (prosperity) development programme : a case study from the Ratnapura district, Sri Lanka

2009

Masteroppgave i development management- Universitetet i Agder 2009 This thesis assesses the impact of the Samurdhi (prosperity) development programme (SDP) on the livelihoods of its beneficiaries in the Ratnapura district of Sri Lanka. The assessment covers three main aspects; development, environment and management. First I identify a main research problem and three sub problems that are directly related to the success of the SDP. Second, based on the sustainable livelihood approach (SLA), I develop a theoretical framework where a poverty level of a household is directly and indirectly affected by the activities of the SDP through two channels; promotional and protective channels. From the…

Commercialization of smallholder farming: determinants andwelfare outcomes : a cross-sectional study in Enderta district, Tigrai, Ethiopia

2009

Masteroppgave i development management- Universitetet i Agder 2009 Transforming the subsistence-oriented production system into a market-oriented production system as a way to increasing the smallholder farmer’s income and thus its welfare outcomes, and reducing rural poverty, has been in the policy spotlight of many developing countries, including Ethiopia, for some time now. However, there are no adequate studies in Tigrai focusing on the level of market integration of the smallholder farmers and whether the market participants are better-off in welfare outcomes. This study, thus, focused on identifying the micro-level factors determining market participation, the level of commercializati…

Transition from subsistence to monetary economy- a counterdiscourse to mainstream development strategies : case study from Samburu distict, Kenya

2009

Masteroppgave i development management- Universitetet i Agder 2009 The present thesis is a case study with aim of performing an investigation of the process unfolding from the subsistence to a monetary economy. It is juxtaposed to counter mainstream development strategies amongst the Samburu people in Samburu District, Kenya. The objective has been trying to analyze the perceptions, ideas, transition- stages and patterns amongst the Samburu people as well as the reveal negative consequences that can occur from implementation of development and modernization strategies. The Samburu people are classified as an indigenous population (IPACC 2007). Indigenous people around the world have often o…

Doing and undoing child marriage in Nepal : an exploratory study using institutional ethnography

2016

Master thesis development management - University of Agder 2016 Child marriage is a practice that occurs across regions, cultures and religions. Every year approximately 15 million girls under the age of eighteen get married. The practice often has serious impacts on the lives of the girls themselves, and child marriage threatens the progress in six out of eight development goals related to education, health, poverty and gender equality. The main drivers have been identified as tradition, poverty, gender norms, security and weak law enforcement, but despite available research a lot more remains to be understood about child marriage. The thesis does not theorise about why it happens, but exp…

Refugees in exodus: Statelessness and identity : a case study of Rohingya refugees in Aceh, Indonesia

2016

Master thesis development management - University of Agder 2016 Stateless people are extremely vulnerable, and the risk of exploitation is high. The Rohingya are a severely oppressed minority in Myanmar, within a system that does not protect them but rather abuse the power to mistreat the vulnerable. As soon as international borders are crossed, they reach another level of vulnerability where anyone can exploit them, as they are stateless, paperless, and without protection from any legal system. The Rohingya are considered illegal immigrants and their religion and ethnicity has branded them as threats to the society, security and well-being of Myanmar’s majority. Additionally, refugees and …

Modulation of voltage-gated Na+ and K+ channels by pumiliotoxin 251D: A “joint venture” alkaloid from arthropods and amphibians

2008

Abstract Certain amphibians provide themselves with a chemical defense by accumulating lipophilic alkaloids into skin glands from dietary arthropods. Examples of such alkaloids are pumiliotoxins (PTXs). In general, PTXs are known as positive modulators of voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs). Unlike other PTXs, PTX 251D does not share this characteristic. However, mice and insect studies showed that PTX 251D is highly toxic and to date the basis of its toxicity remains unknown. In this work, we searched for the possible target of PTX 251D . The toxin was therefore made synthetically and tested on four VGSCs (mammalian rNa v 1.2/β 1 , rNa v 1.4/β 1 , hNa v 1.5/β 1 and insect Para/tipE ) and…

Near-field observation of subwavelength confinement of photoluminescence by a photonic crystal microcavity

2006

We present a direct, room-temperature near-field optical study of light confinement by a subwavelength defect microcavity in a photonic crystal slab containing quantum-well sources. The observations are compared with three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain calculations, and excellent agreement is found. Moreover, we use a subwavelength cavity to study the influence of a near-field probe on the imaging of localized optical modes. © 2006 Optical Society of America.

Apdraudējuma nenovēršamības jēdziens galējās nepieciešamības kontekstā vides aizsardzības režīmos

2018
