The Virtual Reconstruction of the Aesculapius and Hygeia Statues from the Sanctuary of Isis in Lilybaeum: Methods and Tools for Ancient Sculptures’ E…
2022
Thanks to recent technological developments in 3D surveys, computer graphics and virtual reality, new scenarios have been opened for the documentation and enhancement of ancient sculptures. When not totally preserved, sculptures can be digitally reproduced, modified and visualized to simulate their physical or virtual reconstruction in a non-invasive way for specialists or for dissemination aims. The virtual sculptural reconstruction process starts usually from the 3D survey of real fragments, and then continues by integrating missing parts with 3D modelling techniques by means of source evaluation. Along with primary data sources (reality-based model), secondary data sources (photos, drawi…
Study and 3D survey of the Roman baths in the archaeological site of Lylibaeum (Marsala, Italy)
2020
Abstract Archaeological documentation is a fundamental step for research and conservation planning phases. Nowadays traditional recording is always supported by geomatics technologies which offer important support to the growth of archaeological study. The integration of sensors and methodologies seems to give the best results, in terms of time, costs and accuracy of products. In particular, the combination of Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) can help the documentation of complex sites and the production of 3D and 2D products for different purposes. The paper focuses on the integration of TLS and UAV methodologies to record the thermal baths of the Roman Dom…
The research work is focused on the origin and the modifications of a peculiar dome on tambour having a ci…
The contribution concerns the reconstructive study of the early Christian church in the second phase of the building's life. The reconstructive hypothesis, and the 3D model, was based on the study of direct sources: survey, archaeological excavation data and stratigraphic reading of the elevations.
Hand Held 3D Scanning for Cultural Heritage: Experimenting Low Cost Structure Sensor Scan
2017
In the last years 3D scanning has become an important resource in many fields, in particular it has played a key role in study and preservation of Cultural Heritage. Moreover today, thanks to the miniaturization of electronic components, it has been possible produce a new category of 3D scanners, also known as handheld scanners. Handheld scanners combine a relatively low cost with the advantage of the portability. The aim of this chapter is two-fold: first, a survey about the most recent 3D handheld scanners is presented. As second, a study about the possibility to employ the handheld scanners in the field of Cultural Heritage is conducted. In this investigation, a doorway of the Benedictin…
A 3D reworking of the urban transformations of Palermo in recent history for a hypothesis of a "City Museum" based on digital visualizations
2021
The objective that drives this research is given by a multitude of information which, in addition to the contribution of technology, allows us to study, analyze, verify and remodel the sites, monuments and evolutions of the city through graphic processes of perspective restitution that start from the analysis of historical photos. The drawing methods, the digital graphic rendering and through the aid of geometric techniques, contribute to the reconstruction of projects and architectures that are now lost, this is possible thanks to the methods of perspective, axonometry and three-dimensional restitution. This remarkable photographic heritage belonging to Palermo, but also to any other city …
3D structural modeling and restoration in fold-and-thrust belts: examples from the Kumeta and Busambra Mts., NW Sicily (Italy)
2018
The Sicilian Fold and Thrust belt (SFTB) is a structurally complex area where along-strike variations of structural styles, shortening amounts, exhumation rates and amounts of syn-tectonic sedimentation frequently occur. Moreover strong differential clockwise rotations around vertical axes affected the different tectonic units during their emplacement. This complexity, coupled with debatable or incomplete subsurface dataset (e.g., available 2D onshore seismic lines) allowed previous authors to propose different interpretations for the tectonic evolution of the SFTB since Cenozoic time. The study area, located in the Western sector of the SFTB comprises the Kumeta and Busambra ridges (derive…
Digital Technologies for Cultural Heritage Preservation. A case study.
2014
Within the study and knowledge of Cultural Heritage, the Virtual Restoration represents an innovative technical-scientific sector that involves the use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) within traditional and well-established methodologies. The study illustrates a practical experience carried out on a cycle of sculptural works made in stucco that currently shows a number of fragmentary and disjointed parts. In this research a methodological approach is described, whose aim was to build a 3D model and formulate an hypothesis of virtual recomposition of the fragments. In addition, it provided useful geometrical-formal support tools both for the physical-material restoration…
Computer Vision Tools for 3D Modelling in Archaeology
2013
In archaeological Cultural Heritage study 3D modelling has become a very useful process to obtain indispensable data for documentation and visualization. Nowadays the continuous request to achieve photorealistic 3D models has led to testing different techniques and methodologies to speed up both data acquisition and the data processing phase. There are many examples of surveys conducted with the use of range-based and image-based techniques, but, in the last few years, the scientific research has been increasingly moving towards automatic procedures using Computer Vision approach to reduce time during data processing. Computer Vision approach offers a great opportunity for archaeological su…
