Aspects of nutritional deficits and cognitive outcomes – Triangulation across time and subject domains among students and teachers in TIMSS
2022
This article describes associations between breakfast intake and school achievements among Norwegian 9th graders in 2015 and 2019. The study involved a representative sample based on Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), N = 4499 (2015) and N = 4685 (2019). This trend study using structural equation modelling and triangulation revealed a significant positive association between breakfast intake and school achievements among Norwegian 9th graders. This was found for both mathematics and science achievements, in 2015 and 2019, reported both by the students and their teachers. Mediation analyses showed that being hungry at school explained a third of the decrease in sc…

Effects of acute b-alanine supplementation on countermovement jump performance after a 4x400 m fatigue protocol: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-…
2022
This study aimed to examine the effect of acute beta-alanine (β-alanine) supplementation on jump performance after a strenuous fatigue protocol. Twelve healthy young men (age 21.4±0.5 years, body height 180.2±5.8 cm, body mass 76.6±9.2 kg) volunteered to participate in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The experimental group ingested 3.2 g of β-alanine (separated into two 1.6 g dosages) mixed with 23 g of glucose, whereas the placebo group ingested two dosages containing 23 g of glucose. Following the supplementation intake, participants completed a jump protocol involving countermovement jump (CMJ) and four consecutive countermovement jumps (CMJ-4). Subsequently, a 4…
Possible Effects of a Free School Meal on School Environment: The School Meal Intervention in Norway
2021
Evidence suggests that a free school meal can improve children and adolescent diet, social environment, concentration, and school performance. This study aimed to investigate possible effects of a free, healthy school meal among students that usually eat packed meals on behavioral issues, inactiveness, self-efficacy, school enjoyment and classroom environment. A school meal according to the dietary guidelines was served to students in the intervention group (n=55) for one year. A control group consumed packed meals as usual (n=109). Students (10-12 years) responded to a questionnaire at baseline and after one year. We used linear regression analyses and did not find significant effects of a…
Barns matmot 2.0 : Diet, development, and food neophobia in early years. How to promote healthy diets in a kindergarten setting
2021
Early diet has a profound impact on a child’s development, growth, and future health. A varied diet with a high intake of vegetables is positive in several domains of health. In Norway, as in many other countries, the intake of vegetables is too low among both children and adults. An important barrier to vegetable intake in children is food neophobia. Food neophobia, meaning unwillingness to try unfamiliar foods, is a trait that is most explicit in children between two and six years of age. As this age period is important for the development of food preferences and lifelong dietary habits, understanding which factors are related to food neophobia in early age is important to know how to bes…

Kommunene på Agder og opptrappingsplanen på rusfeltet : den sektoriserte stat møter kommunene
2017
During the last 25 years there have been several efforts to strengthen the services to patients with mental health problems and substance use disorders. The new plan (opptrappingsplanen for rusfeltet) was launched in 2016 and will be completed in 2020. Again, as in previous efforts, it is the municipal health services that are going to do the job. According to the results of this study, it is the smallest municipalities that have the highest number of employees working in the mental health and s…
Status for norske kommuners arbeid med oversikt i 2019
2020
Master's thesis in Public health science (ME516) Background and purpose: The Public Health Act requires all municipalities in the country to have an overview of health status and factors of influence. Previous surveys show that the review work does not satisfy section 5 of the Public Health Act. The surveys also show that there are differences in municipality size when it comes to overview. The study examines how far Norwegian municipalities have come with the overview work, and whether the differences in municipality size still apply. Research question: What is the status of the overview work in 2019, and to what extent does the size and centrality of the municipality influence the work on…
