Alteration-Induced Volcano Instability at La Soufrière de Guadeloupe (Eastern Caribbean)

2021

International audience; Volcanoes are unstable structures that deform laterally and frequently experience mass wasting events. Hydrothermal alteration is often invoked as a mechanism that contributes significantly to volcano instability. We present a study that combines laboratory experiments, geophysical data, and large-scale numerical modeling to better understand the influence of alteration on volcano stability, using La Soufrière de Guadeloupe (Eastern Caribbean) as a case study. Laboratory experiments on variably altered (advanced argillic alteration) blocks show that uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, and cohesion decrease as a function of increasing alteration, but that …

Soveltavan liikunnan maailmankongressi Suomessa 2021

2021

Suomalaisen soveltavan liikunnan juuret ulottuvat 1960-luvulle. Määrätietoisemman kehittämisen aika alkoi 1980-luvulla, jolloin asetetut suuntaviivat näkyvät yhä soveltavan liikunnan käytännöissä. Kesällä 2021 Suomi ja Jyväskylä pääsevät virtuaalisesti alan kansainväliseen valokeilaan. nonPeerReviewed

Seurantatutkimus Työväen Urheiluseurojen muuttuvista näkemyksistä

2020

The main aim of the study is to investigate the current role and future perspectives of the sports clubs of the Finnish Workers Sport Federation (Suomen Työväen Urheiluliitto, TUL) by two online surveys made in 2005 and 2018. The response rates were 23 % and 25 % (n=257 & n=200) of the clubs. According to the surveys, the working-class ideology is being replaced by an ideology of well-being, which signifies physical activity, health and equality. To activate children and youth was and will be the most significant task of the clubs, which clearly points out the strategic orientation of the clubs. The main financial assets of the clubs were volunteers, and direct and indirect support from the…

The psychosocial impact of career-ending injuries in elite rugby union players : a qualitative study

2014

Retirement from sport can be a difficult transition for an athlete, particularly when participation in sport has formed a significant part of their identity and life as a whole. In the case of professional sport, athletes who retire because of a career-ending injury may have to deal with the unexpected double impact of losing their career and income and recovering from a serious injury, thus potentially making this exit from sport particularly problematic. This transition can be made all the more difficult since the athlete may be unprepared for it. Research on career-ending injuries among professional athletes, however, is limited. The purpose of this study was to document the lived experi…

Contrasts in fitness, motor competence and physical activity among children involved in single or multiple sports

2021

Abstract Study aim: While there is wide debate around specialization in one sport, there is a lack of information about fitness levels and motor competence of children participating in single or multiple sports. Material and methods: The study involved 358 fifth-grade children who participated in a set of health-related fitness and motor competence tests over two consecutive years. A subsample of children (n = 109) wore an accelerometer for seven consecutive days. The independent samples t-test and ANCOVA were used to compare differences between single and multi-sport participants in study variables and changes between baseline and follow-up. Results: Multi-sport participants performed bett…

High-density electromyography activity in various hamstring exercises

2019

Proximal‐distal differences in muscle activity are rarely considered when defining the activity level of hamstring muscles. The aim of this study was to determine the inter‐muscular and proximal‐distal electromyography (EMG) activity patterns of hamstring muscles during common hamstring exercises. Nineteen amateur athletes without a history of hamstring injury performed 9 exercises, while EMG activity was recorded along the biceps femoris long head (BFlh) and semitendinosus (ST) muscles using 15‐channel high‐density electromyography (HD‐EMG) electrodes. EMG activity levels normalized to those of a maximal voluntary isometric contraction (%MVIC) were determined for the eccentric and concentr…

Perceptions of sport injuries of young elite swimmers

2012

Mari Lehtinen, 2012. Perceptions of sport injuries of young elite swimmers. Department of Sport Sciences. University of Jyväskylä. Master’s Thesis of Sport and Exercise Psychology. 64 pages. Sport injuries occur at all levels of sport. Sport injury can limit or end athlete´s career. It is important to find out ways how sport psychology can prevent and treat sport in juries. This can be done for example, by having impacts on mental and physical capabilities of athletes. Aim was to study rehabilitation process of injured swimmers according to the sport psychology point of view. The aim was to study experiences of elite swimmers during recovery process. Secondly, this study helped to describe …
