The Effect of Tiotropium in Symptomatic Asthma Despite Low- to Medium-Dose Inhaled Corticosteroids: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
2014
BackgroundTiotropium, a once-daily long-acting anticholinergic bronchodilator, has demonstrated efficacy in patients with asthma who were symptomatic despite treatment with medium- to high-dose inhaled corticosteroids (ICS).ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of once-daily tiotropium Respimat (5 μg or 2.5 μg), compared with placebo Respimat, as add-on therapy to low- to medium-dose ICS for adults with symptomatic asthma.MethodsA phase III, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted (NCT01316380). Adults with symptomatic asthma receiving low- to medium-dose ICS (200-400 μg budesonide or equivalent dose) and a pre-bronchodilator forced expira…
α-Adrenoceptor Interaction of Tetrandrine and Isotetrandrine in the Rat: Functional and Binding Assays
1998
Abstract The action of 1S,1′S-tetrandrine, a bisbenzyltetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloid, on α1-adrenoceptors has been compared with that of its isomer 1R,1′S-isotetrandrine. The work includes binding assays to analyse the affinity of these products for the [3H]prazosin binding site of rat cerebral cortical membranes and functional studies on rat isolated aorta to examine the effects of both alkaloids on intracellular calcium processes related or not to α-adrenoceptor activation. A radioligand receptor-binding study showed that both compounds interacted with the α1-adrenoceptors displacing [3H]prazosin from the specific binding site. The Ki values (inhibition constants) were 0.69±0.12 and 1.6±…
Role of hydrophobicity on the monoamine receptor binding affinities of central nervous system drugs: a quantitative retention-activity relationships …
2004
Abstract Biological action and activity reflect an aspect of the fundamental physicochemical properties of the bioactive compounds. As an alternative to classical QSAR studies, in this work different quantitative retention–activity relationships (QRAR) models are proposed, which are able to describe the role of hydrophobicity on the binding affinity to different brain monoamine receptors (H 1 -histamine, α 1 -noradrenergic and 5-HT 2 -serotonergic) of different families of psychotherapeutic drugs. The retention of compounds is measured in a biopartitioning micellar chromatography (BMC) system using Brij-35 mobile phases. The adequacy of the QRAR models developed is due to the fact that both…
Day-night differences in the sensitivity of adrenoceptors in the Syrian hamster pineal gland: an in vivo iontophoretic study.
1989
Abstract Investigations on the regulation of pineal melatonin synthesis in the Syrian hamster revealed distinct differences compared to this well-understood mechanism in rat. E.g., a circadian profile of pineal norepinephrine (NE) is absent, there is no β-adrenoceptor sensitivity during daytime and adrenergic receptor supersensitivity is not easily achieved. To elucidate the action of NE on pineal receptor sites, the effects of iontophoretic application of adrenergic compounds on spontaneous electrical discharge rates of pinealocytes were investigated during day- and nighttime. Following application of either NE, isoproterenol or clonidine, cells were activated, inhibited or not affected. W…
Cytokine Polymorphism in Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy
2014
IMIN11. Cytokine Polymorphism in Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy P. Di Gangi1, L. Scola1, S. Giambanco1, M. Bova1, G. Santini1, L. Vaccarino1, C. R. Balistreri1, D. Lio1, P. Assennato1, S. Novo1, G. Novo1 1University of Palermo, Palermo, Italy Background: Takotsubo (TT) cardiomyopathy is characterised by an acute left ventricular dysfunction triggered by emotional or physical stresses. Clinically, the syndrome is characterised by acute symptoms mimicking acute infarction without relevant electrocardiographic and biochemical markers of myocardial damage changes. Stressful events inducing an excess catecholamine release and myocardial β-adrenergic receptors (β-AR) seem to play a major role in TT. Ac…
STRUCTURATION EXTENSIVE ET TRANSTENSIVE AU DEVONO-DINANTIEN DU BASSIN DE TIM MERSOÏ (BORDURE OCCIDENTALE DE L'AÏR, NORD NIGER).
2007
Excision of ectopic adrenocortical tissue during laparoscopy for isolated tubal torsion
2017
Ectopic adrenal tissue is an occasional finding during surgery procedures. These remnants are usually found near the primary gland or along the course of gonadal vessels consistently with embryologic development. The appearance is of a small but distinct, soft, round, yellow nodule and only cortical adrenal tissue is normally observed. We report a case of an emergency laparoscopic salpingostomy for isolated tubal torsion with excision of EAT, incidentally found in left ovarian pedicle, followed by postoperative resumption of regular menses and regression of hirsutism. Although intraoperative research of ectopic adrenal tissue is not necessary its removal is indicated in case of incidental f…

TIVOLI, HADRIAN'S VILLA: THE PLUTONIUM PROJECT (COMUNE DI TIVOLI, PROVINCIA DI ROMA, REGIONE LAZIO)
2021
The Universities of Pavia and Oxford continued their investigations in Villa Adriana, in the area called Plutonium, traditionally interpreted as a reproduction of the Underworld, and located on one of the highest rises of the complex, in the east part of the Villa. The excavations took place from 1 to 21 July 2019. A team of 12 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers took part in the project, both from Oxford and Pavia Universities (S. Andronio, I. Bossolino, E. Casarotti, A. Dalgkitsi, E. Di Virgilio, V. Jukic Buca, A. Poldi Allai, G. Restaino, T. Runeckles, A. Verde). Dr Gilberto Montali, from the University of Palermo, supervised the architectural survey and documentation of the a…
