A review of the world's soil museums and exhibitions

The soil science community needs to communicate about soils and the use of soil information to various audiences, especially to the general public and public authorities. In this global review article, we synthesis information pertaining to museums solely dedicated to soils or which contain a permanent exhibition on soils. We identified 38 soil museums specifically dedicated to soils, 34 permanent soil exhibitions, and 32 collections about soils that are accessible by appointment. Harnessing productivity potential and rehabilitation of degraded sodic lands through Jatropha based intercropping systems

Abstract This paper evaluates an intercropping model with J atropha curcas L. (JCL) as an alternative crop on degraded sodic land in north India. Monoculture of JCL has not proven economically viable in India in view of its poor yield; therefore, intercrops in between JCL plantations were tried to optimize land use efficiency. The results revealed that the planting of JCL at 3 × 3 m spacing with inter-cultivation of sweet basil–matricaria (SB-M) cropping system for four years was more economically viable than planting at 3 × 2 m spacing and the other rotations tested in the study. Chitosan films for the microbiological preservation of refrigerated sole and hake fillets

The effect of chitosan films for shelf-life extension of fresh fillets of hake (Merluccius merluccius) and sole (Solea solea) was evaluated over a 15-day storage at 4 ± 1 °C. Fish fillets wrapped in a chitosan matrix were individually packaged in air (AP) and under vacuum (VP). Microbiological analyses (total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, Pseudomonas, H2S-producing bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, Enterobacteriaceae and Listeria monocytogenes were carried out during the shelf-life. Localization and interactions of melatonin in dry cholesterol/lecithin mixed reversed micelles used as cell membrane models

The state of melatonin confined in dry cholesterol/lecithin mixed reversed micelles dispersed in CCl4 was investigated using 1H-NMR and FT-IR spectroscopies as a function of the melatonin to lecithin molar ratio (R(MLT)) and of the cholesterol to lecithin molar ratio (R(CHL)). An analysis of experimental results leads to the hypothesis that, independent of R(MLT) and as a consequence of anisotropic melatonin/lecithin, melatonin/cholesterol and cholesterol/lecithin interactions, melatonin is totally solubilized in reversed micelles.
