The separation of lignin from the black liquor generated during alkaline pulping is reviewed in this article with an emphasis on chemistry. Based on published accounts, the precipitation of lignin from spent pulping liquor by addition of acids can be understood based on dissociation equilibria of weak acid groups, which affects the solubility behavior of lignin-related chemical species. Solubility issues also govern lignin separation technologies based on ultrafiltration membranes; reduction in membrane permeability is often affected by conditions leading to decreased solubility of lignin decomposition products and the presence of colloidal matter. Browsing hinders the regeneration of broadleaved trees in uneven-aged forest management in southern Finland

Uneven-aged forest management has attained increasing popularity. It may benefit biodiversity, buffer against pests and abiotic damages, decrease runoff from clearcuts and improve recreational values. We studied how gap cuttings and single-tree selection cuttings influence browsing damage in spruce-dominated forests in south-central Finland. Overall, browsing damage was especially frequent in aspen and rowan, but also in birch. The larger the basal area left in harvesting, the lower the browsing pressure on birch and rowan; neither the harvesting method nor the seedling density had an independent effect on browsing damage. Hydrophobins play an important role in binding and assembly of fungal surface structures as well as in medium-air interactions. These, hydrophobic properties provide interesting possibilities when purification of macromolecules is concerned. Characterization of Rabbit Mesenchymal Cell Attachment on Calcium Phosphate Surface

In the current study, the effect of three different treated surfaces of hydroxyapatite and β-tricalcium phosphate on mesenchymal cell attachment has been investigated. Calcium phosphate powders have been synthesized, uniaxially pressed, polished and sintered. Mesenchymal cells have been seeded onto unpolished, polished and polished-thermally etched ceramic samples. The ceramic samples have been characterized by XRD, FTIR and SEM. Results have shown that the best cell attachment and morphology are on the unpolished surface indicating that relatively rough surface is better for cell application.

We report the synthesis of Co-doped CdS nanoclusters (Cd1−xCoxS) for different doping concentrations (x = 0.10, 0.20 and 0.30) and characterization of their structural, optical, and magnetic properties. The structural properties studied by X-ray diffraction revealed hexagonal-greenockite structure and a decrease of the lattice parameters (a and c) with doping, showing incorporation of Co in the lattice. The morphology of the nanoclusters was studied by scanning electron microscopy. Anomalous and normal Hall effect in hydrogenated amorphous Si prepared by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition

The double sign anomaly of the Hall coefficient has been studied in p -doped and n -doped hydrogenated amorphous silicon grown by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition and annealed up to 500 °C. Dark conductivity as a function of temperature has been measured, pointing out a conduction mechanism mostly through the extended states. Anomalous Hall effect has been observed only in the as-deposited n -doped film, disappearing after annealing at 500 °C, while p -doped samples exhibit normal Hall effect.
