Carthage's military installations of the First Punic War on Monte Pellegrino (Palermo)

The excavation in the park of Villa Belmonte (Monte Pellegrino, Palermo) has brought to light several warehouses, made with a “pseudo-frame” technique, probably with a straw roof, used for the storage of foodstuffs, given the large quantity of Punic-type amphorae found in situ, datable to around the middle of the third century BC. In addition, a section of road - about 3 m wide that proceeds in the direction of WNW- ESE, consisting of two layers of use - has been intercepted. We believe to have tracked down part of a strategic/military station used by the Carthaginian army during the crucial years of the First Punic War.

L’opera si articola in due distinte parti: nella prima si presenta lo studio dell’Anfiteatro di Sabratha mentre nella seconda si propone un nuovo catalogo degli anfiteatri della provincia dell’Africa proconsolare. L’Anfiteatro di Sabratha, scavato e restaurato tra il 1924 e il 1926 dalla missione italiana diretta da Renato Bartoccini, era rimasto sostanzialmente inedito. Dal 2009 al 2012 è stato oggetto di una nuova ricerca che si prefiggeva di giungere ad una lettura complessiva del monumento nel suo contesto urbano, storico e sociale, proponendone anche un’ipotesi ricostruttiva. Umbilical cord is the structure that connects the fetus to the placenta. Umbilical cord at term is made of three vessels surrounded by the Wharton's Jelly, a mocous connective tissue rich in glycosaminoglycans, proteoglycans and different types of collagens and other microfibrils, which are responsible for its elasticity and its mechanical properties. Umbilical cord seems to lack any capillaries or lymphatics and umbilical vessels are unique in lacking any innervation of the vascular tone, and the expression of some enzymes responsible for the remodelling of the extracellular matrix. In previous studies performed on rodents, we detected the presence of adreno-cholinergic and peptidergic innervation in seminal vesicles and other organs of the male genital system, such as prostate and ductus deferens, in which we also investigated the expression of NOS and NADPH-diaphorase. During the present project we focused our attention on the expression of some peptides involved in local control of smooth muscle relaxation, contractility, vasodilatation and control of blood flow in rat seminal vesicles. In 1996 and 1997, a century after the excavations conducted by F. Halbherr, new soundings were conducted in the Greek agora at Gortyna as part of the activities of the Italian Archaeological School at Athens, and with the permission and cooperation of the 23th Ephoria of Antiquities of Heraklion. The excations started from the western edge of the agora, by the Mitropolianos torrent, where F. Halbherr and L. Pernier had discovered three parallel walls. The aria "Misero pargoletto", sung by Timante in the third act of Pietro Metastasio's "Demofoonte", enjoyed exceptional fortune throughout the eighteenth century. The text was set tu music dozens of times not only as part of the opera it belongs to, but also as an independent piece. This essay discusses the judgements expressed on "Misero pargoletto" by several men of letters and theorists, examines some buffo parodies of the aria that demonstrate its wide notoriety, and formulates some hypotheses about the reasons for such a great success, which can be partially justified by the new conception of fatherood that emerged in the so-called Age of Sensibility.
