RELIEVE: twenty years immersed in the chronology of open access of the sciences
2014
Coinciding with the first 20 years of RELIEVE, this article presents a comparative analysis of the historical milestones of the journal and the worldwide Open Access movement, in order to better frame its evolution. We review some of the principal contributions made in the field of scientific communication during these two decades: the appearance and development of electronic journals, the development of the Open Access movement, the appearance of repositories, the development of platforms to manage articles, new databases, etc.
Brewer's spent grains as biofuels in combustion-based energy recovery processes: Evaluation of thermo-oxidative decomposition
2022
[EN] The high global generation of wastes and side streams from agri-food production has led to environmental impact and causes nature degradation due to their uncontrolled management. These wastes are profitable materials with significant economic value that could otherwise be exploited as new sources in the feed industry or the production of bioenergy. Among them, brewer¿s spent grain (BSG) is a solid by-product generated in the beerbrewing process that consists of the barley grain husks together with parts of the pericarp and seed coat layer. Although it is rich in fibres and proteins, its main use is currently limited to animal feed or simply deposition to landfills. This study pursues …
SPLENOGONADAL FUSION: A Genetic disorder? Report of a Case and Review of the Literature
2014
Splenogonadal fusion is a rare congenital anomaly in which there is fusion between the spleen and gonad, epididymis or vas. We treated a patient with scrotal mass. A discontinuous fusion between the spleen and epididymis was found: after frozen section mass was excised sparing testis. Although rare, the splenogonadal fusion should be considered in the differential diagnosis of scrotal masses in children, and orchiectomy should be avoided. Moreover, examination of siblings showed a brother affected from accessory spleen. This finding, not reported previously to our knowledge, suggests a possible familiarity of this disorder.
Global Spaces for Local Politics: An Exploratory Analysis of Facebook Ads in Spanish Election Campaigns
2021
[EN] Sponsored content on Facebook has become an indispensable tool for implementing political campaign strategies. However, in political communication research, this channel is still unexplored due to its advertising model in which only target audiences are exposed to sponsored content. The launching of the Facebook Ad Library in May 2018 can be considered a turning point in this regard, inasmuch as it now offers users direct access to ads paid for by political parties, among other advertisers. This paper analyzes some aspects of the strategies implemented by six national parties during the campaigns running up to the two general elections held in Spain in 2019, by performing an analysis o…
Triblock SEBS/DVB crosslinked and sulfonated membranes: Fuel cell performance and conductivity
2021
[EN] A set of styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene triblock copolymer (SEBS) membranes with 10 or 25 wt.% divinyl-benzene (DVB) as a crosslinking agent were prepared and validated. Physicochemical characterization revealed suitable hydrolytic and thermal stability of photo-crosslinked membranes containing 25%wt. DVB and post-sulfonated. These compositions were evaluated in H2/O2 single cells, and electrical and proton conductivities were furtherly assessed. The membranes with the milder post-sulfonation showed greater proton conductivity than those with excessive sulfonation. In terms of electrical conductivity, a universal power law was applied, and the values obtained were low enough for bei…
Inverse Malthusianism and Recycling Economics: The Case of the Textile Industry
2020
The current use of natural resources in the textile industry leads us to introduce a new economic concept called inverse Malthusianism describing a context in which population grows linearly and resource consumption grows exponentially. Inverse Malthusianism implies an exponential increase in environmental impact that recycling may contribute to reduce. Our main goal is to extend the analysis of materials selection under the principle of equimarginality proposed by Jevons. As a first result, we show the particular circumstances under which policies excluding recycled supplies are never optimal. We also aim to overcome the difficulties of reducing environmental aspects to monetary units. To …

Impact of the knowledge society in the university and in scientific communication
2014
Over the last two decades, as a result of the introduction and intensive use of technologies for information and general knowledge, especially from the internet, the university is living in a process of complete transformation that affects it´s academic and organizational structures as well as the conception of educational methodology. The ICTs have demonstrated a need to establish coherent institutional strategies in their use and application, along with the possibility to expand the sphere of institutional action, in regards to general access to higher education. All of this shows an existing change from a model of education based on the transmission of knowledge, that was rather limited …
Factores facilitadores y barreras en la transición a la ciencia abierta: perspectiva de los agentes del sistema científico español
2022
This paper presents the results of a research study whose objective was to identify the facilitating factors and barriers that, in the opinion of representatives of the Spanish scientific community, impact the implementation of the new open science model in four areas: open access, open research data, research assessment and open peer review. A qualitative study was designed in which information was obtained through interviews with researchers, editors of scientific journals, representatives of assessment agencies and vice-chancellors, and through a focus group of librarians with expertise in aspects of open science. The enabling factors and barriers identified were related to the researche…
