Amelanotic conjunctival melanoma

Conjunctival melanoma is a rare condition of the eye pigment predominantly affecting white adults. We describe a 32-year-old white man with an amelanotic malignant melanoma of the conjunctiva that is not associated with primary acquired melanosis (PAM) or melanocytic nevus. The patient presented with a 2-year history of nonpigmented vascularized nodules of the right eye. Results of hematoxylin and eosin (H and E) staining of the lesion showed an invasive nodule with vertical spreading, invasion of the substantia propria corneae, and ulceration. Can CAP guideline adherence improve patient outcome in internal medicine departments?

The impact of compliance with Italian guidelines on the outcome of hospitallised community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in internal medicine departments was evaluated. All Fine class IV or V CAP patients were included in this multicentre, interventional, before-and-after study, composed of three phases: 1) a retrospective phase (RP; 1,443 patients); 2) a guideline implementation phase; and 3) a prospective phase (PP; 1,404 patients). Antibiotic prescription according to the guidelines increased significantly in the PP. ObjectivesA few variants of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) have been described, but their frequency and evolution to typical CIDP remain unclear. To determine the frequency and characteristics of the CIDP variants, their possible evolution to typical CIDP, and treatment response.MethodsWe applied a set of diagnostic criteria to 460 patients included in a database of Italian patients with CIDP. Clinical characteristics and treatment response were reviewed for each patient. Nasal airway in cleft-palate patients: acoustic rhinometric data

The objective of this study was to investigate an instrumental assessment technique for acquiring reproducible, metric data on the nasal airway in cleft-palate associated nasal dysplasia. A consecutive sample of 23 unilateral, 17 bilateral CLP patients and 15 controls with subjective normal nasal patency from a cleft-palate rehabilitation centre were studied. A series of transnasal acoustic measurements (pressure wave: 55 dB for 2 ms) of nasal volume were performed before and after topical decongestion with 2 x 0.3 mg of xylometazoline. Cortical astrocytosis in juvenile rhesus monkeys infected with simian immunodeficiency virus

The pattern of expression of GFAP immunoreactivity in astrocytes of the juvenile rhesus monkey cortex was examined following infection with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV). Blocks of cerebral cortex plus subjacent white matter from saline- and formalin-perfused brain were examined by peroxidase-linked immunochemical and immunofluorescence staining of deparaffinized sections. Strong GFAP immunoreactivity was found in astrocytic cells in both uninfected and SIV-infected juvenile macaque in the subpial cerebral cortex and in subcortical white matter, where GFAP-positive cells were abundant.
