Pharmacological Management of Cancer Pain in the Elderly

2007

Existing studies indicate a high prevalence rate and poor management of cancer pain in the elderly. Pain is often considered an expected concomitant of aging, and older patients are considered more sensitive to opioids. Despite the well known pharmacokinetic changes in the elderly, the complex network of factors involved in the opioid response make the evaluation of a single element, such as age, more difficult. Notwithstanding such difficulties, appropriate analgesic treatment is able to control cancer pain in the elderly in most cases. Skills necessary to optimise pain control in older cancer patients include the ability to objectively assess functional age (not necessarily related to chr…

Association between cognitive impairment and guideline adherence for application of chemotherapy in older patients with breast cancer: Results from t…

2018

Background This study examined the association between cognitive impairment and guideline adherence for application of chemotherapy in older patients with breast cancer. Patients and methods In the prospective multicenter cohort study BRENDA II, patients aged ≥65 years with primary breast cancer were sampled over a period of 4 years (2009-2012). A multiprofessional team (tumor board) discussed recommendation for adjuvant chemotherapy according to the German S3 guideline. Cognitive impairment was screened by the clock-drawing test (CDT) prior to adjuvant treatment. Results Two hundred and sixty-three patients were included in the study and CDT data were available for 193 patients. Thirty-one…

Tubular carcinoma of the breast: Outcome and loco-regional recurrence in 307 patients

2005

Abstract Purpose The aim of this study is to describe the University of Florence experience in evaluating clinical, pathologic and treatment factors as they are related to the outcome and loco-regional recurrence in patients with tubular breast carcinoma. Material and methods Three hundred and seven patients (median age 56.4 years, range 26–91 years) with histological verified tubular carcinoma of the breast were consecutively treated at University of Florence from 1976 to 2001. All patients were followed for a median of 8.4 years (range 3 months to 20 years). Thirty-seven women underwent mastectomy and 270 underwent breast conserving surgery. Positive axillary nodes were found in 15% of pa…

COMPliance and Arthralgia in Clinical Therapy: the COMPACT trial, assessing the incidence of arthralgia, and compliance within the first year of adju…

2014

5 Office-based Professional Association Gynecologic Oncologists e.V. in Germany (BNGO e.V.), Berlin; 6 Background: This prospective study evaluated the relationship between arthralgia and compliance during the first year of adjuvant anastrozole therapy in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive early breast cancer. Patients and methods: COMPliance and Arthralgia in Clinical Therapy (COMPACT) was an open-label, multicenter, noninterventional study conducted in Germany. Patients had started adjuvant anastrozole 3-6 months before the study start. The primary end points were arthralgia, compliance, and the relationship between compliance and arthralgia, assessed at specific time poi…

Efficacy of one-year maintenance in early adjuvant chemotherapy for intermediate risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Preliminary results of a ra…

2008

Introduction and Objective: The clinical value of early intravesical adjuvant chemotherapy after TUR of intermediate risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMI TCCB) is well established. On the other hand, the optimal schedule regimen and the role of maintenance are still debated. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of one-year maintenance schedule in patients submitted to TUR plus adjuvant early intravesical chemotherapy. Methods: Between May 2002 and August 2003, 577 patients, were recruited. All patients underwent TUR and early (within 6 hours) intravesical chemotherapy with epirubicin at the dose of 80 mg diluted in 60 ml of saline solution. When histology w…
