Construction, Commissioning and First Results of a Highly Granular Hadron Calorimeter with SiPM-on-Tile Read-out
2018
The CALICE collaboration is developing a highly granular Analogue Hadron sampling CALorimeter (AHCAL) for a future electron-positron collider. Very small detection units are required for the AHCAL due to an optimized design for the Particle Flow Algorithm. This is realized with scintillator tiles each wrapped in reflector foil and individually read out by a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM). These scintillator tiles and SiPMs are assembled on readout boards (HCAL Base Unit, HBU) which are integrated later on in the AHCAL detector stack. With this design a higher energy resolution is achievable, but also a large quantity of components (around 8,000,000 scintillator tiles and SiPMs) are needed t…
A pedagogical approach to the Magnus expansion
2010
Time-dependent perturbation theory as a tool to compute approximate solutions of the Schrodinger equation does not preserve unitarity. Here we present, in a simple way, how the Magnus expansion (also known as exponential perturbation theory) provides such unitary approximate solutions. The purpose is to illustrate the importance and consequences of such a property. We suggest that the Magnus expansion may be introduced to students in advanced courses of quantum mechanics.
Electrochemical Abatement of Organic Pollutants in Water by Electro- Fenton with Natural Heterogeneous Catalysts Under Pressure
2020
In recent decades, electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) have proved as alternative technologies to conventional processes. Indeed, EAOPs can often allow to treat wastewater containing toxic and POPs. Among them, electro-Fenton (EF) is considered particularly promising for the treatment of recalcitrant organics, since it presents various advantages, including high abatements for many organic pollutants, simplicity of equipment and operations, relatively low cost and low consumption of chemicals. Recently, the utilization of some natural heterogeneous catalysts was proposed in order to avoid some disadvantages of the conventional EF process. In this frame, in this work EF proc…
Informal caregiving burden in advanced non-small cell lung cancer: the HABIT study.
2007
Introduction This study's aim was to assess economic data regarding the home assistance burden for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients in Italy. Patients and Methods One hundred four NSCLC patients in second-line chemotherapy (2LC) or in supportive therapy (ST) were enrolled in 18 Italian oncology departments and were observed for 3 months. The main caregiver's workload was assessed monthly by a task scale; other caregivers' activities were also registered. Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status was assessed by physicians, and patients completed the Lung Cancer Symptoms (LCS) subscale. Formal caregiving time was valued according to market prices; informal car…
Multi-beam cooperative frequency reuse for coordinated multi-point transmission
2010
Coordinated multi-point (CoMP) joint transmission is considered in the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) long term evolution (LTE)-advanced as a key technique to mitigate inter-cell interference and improve the cell-edge performance. To effectively apply CoMP joint transmission, efficient frequency reuse schemes need to be designed to support resource management cooperation among coordinated cells. However, most of the existing frequency reuse schemes are not suitable for CoMP systems due to not considering multi-point joint transmission scenarios in their frequency reuse rules. In addition, the restrictions of frequency resources in those schemes result in a high blocking probabili…

Heterogeneous photocatalysis: a promising advanced oxidation process
2018
This chapter reports the fundamentals of heterogeneous PC. In particular, different kinetic models and the influence of some parameters (such as pH, temperature, light intensity) on the rate of PC are described, and the effects of some photocatalyst modifications are discussed. Methods for photoreactor modeling are analyzed and the coupling of PC with other AOPs using H2O2, O3, and peroxydisulfate are discussed.

Weekly Cisplatin and Volumetric-Modulated Arc Therapy With Simultaneous Integrated Boost for Radical Treatment of Advanced Cervical Cancer in Elderly…
2016
Background: To evaluate the feasibility and clinical preliminary results of weekly cisplatin and volumetric-modulated arc therapy to the pelvis with simultaneous integrated boost to macroscopic disease in a cohort of elderly patients. Materials and Methods: Inclusion criteria of this prospective study were age ≥70 years, Karnofsky performance status 70 to 100, locally advanced histologically proven squamous cervical carcinoma, and patients unable to undergo brachytherapy. Radiation doses prescribed were 66 Gy to the macroscopic disease and 54 Gy to the pelvic nodes in 30 fractions. Weekly cisplatin dose was 40 mg/mq. Results: A total of 30 patients were recruited. Median follow-up was 32 mo…
