Hierarchical porous carbon with designed pore architecture and study of its adsorptive properties

Abstract Ordered mesoporous carbon nanoparticles have been synthesized by a nanocasting procedure from furfuryl alcohol impregnation into alumino–silica UVM-7 material. By a proper adjustment of the synthesis parameters, furfuryl alcohol volume vs . template pore volume, it was possible to obtain a carbonaceous templated material which keeps the hierarchical bimodal porosity of the silica together with its high surface area (>1000 m 2 /g), as it was confirmed by means of electron transmission microscopy and N 2 adsorption isotherms. Small-pore driven high capacitance in a hierarchical carbon via carbonization of Ni-MOF-74 at low temperatures

A hierarchical porous carbon prepared via direct carbonization of Ni-MOF-74 loaded with furfuryl alcohol at 450 °C displays high specific capacitance in comparison with other MOF-derived carbons as a result of the formation of micropores smaller than 1 nm.

Adhesives and mounting media in aerobiological sampling

Abstract Because microscopical identification and counting is vital in most aerobiological studies, pollen and spores are usually collected on some adhesive. The adhesives should not be water-soluble. For optically best results water-soluble mounting media with refractive indices about 1.40–1.45 are used. There are compatibility problems between water insoluble adhesives and watery mounting media. The former tend to move to stripes or droplets, distorting the image and moving the spores from their original positions. Silica-coated superparamagnetic nanoparticles as contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging: Synthesis and physicological charaterizations

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) have received a growing interest for various biomedical applications due to their interesting magnetic properties. Herein, we report a method for facile synthesis of colloidal silica-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Si-SPIONs). The polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-SPIONs were successfully prepared and then coated with silica by the modified Stober method. The obtained Si-SPIONs are highly monodisperse with uniform morphology. The exact mechanism of action of anesthetics is still an open question. While some observations suggest specific anesthetic-protein interactions, nonspecific perturbation of the lipid bilayer has also been suggested. Perturbations of bilayer properties could subsequently affect the structure and function of membrane proteins. Oleuropein, the major secoiridoid in olive tree leaves, possesses a wide range of health promoting properties. It has recently been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory activity. We have evaluated the effect of oleuropein on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced experimental colitis in mice in order to provide insight into its mechanisms of action.
