Fast and accurate methodology for direct mercury determination in hair and nails
2015
AbstractA solvent-free, easy, fast and waste-free methodology was developed for the determination of total mercury levels in hair and nails. Samples were taken from several volunteers and directly analysed, with levels of mercury in the range between 0.5 and 8 ng/mg. The influence of quantity of hair, as well as the addition of small amount of solvent and the necessity of previous treatment were studied. Also, a history of mercury exposure was provided by the distance of the hair from the scalp of each volunteer, the results of which were correlated with fish consumption. Furthermore, a short study of mercury in nails was carried out and correlated to the results from hair mercury levels. A…
Method for Reproducible Shipboard Segmented Flow Analysis Ammonium Measurement Using an In-House Reference Material for Quality Control
2021
Ammonium is a fundamental nutrient for phytoplankton growth in seawater and is a key component of the microbial loop. Ammonium measured in parallel with other nutrients is crucial in understanding the small temporal scale changes in oceanographic ecology. Despite the importance of measuring ammonium at sea, owing to its lability, there is no consensus on the best method. The lack of availability of certified reference materials for ammonium in seawater also makes it difficult to assess the accuracy and reproducibility of ammonium measurements. In this study we present a modified segmented flow analysis method using ortho-phthaldialdehyde (OPA) with fluorescence detection to measure ammonium…
Special Issue on Computational Intelligence and Nature-Inspired Algorithms for Real-World Data Analytics and Pattern Recognition
2018
This special issue of Algorithms is devoted to the study of Computational Intelligence and Nature-Inspired Algorithms for Real-World Data Analytics and Pattern Recognition. The special issue considered both theoretical contributions able to advance the state-of-the-art in this field and practical applications that describe novel approaches for solving real-world problems.
Intended or Unintended Doping? A Review of the Presence of Doping Substances in Dietary Supplements Used in Sports
2017
Introduction: The use of dietary supplements is increasing among athletes, year after year. Related to the high rates of use, unintentional doping occurs. Unintentional doping refers to positive anti-doping tests due to the use of any supplement containing unlisted substances banned by anti-doping regulations and organizations, such as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The objective of this review is to summarize the presence of unlabeled doping substances in dietary supplements that are used in sports. Methodology: A review of substances/metabolites/markers banned by WADA in ergonutritional supplements was completed using PubMed. The inclusion criteria were studies published up until Se…
Towards an open database of assessment material for STEM subjects: requirements and recommendations from early field trials
2022
If appropriately implemented, open databases of instruction material may help teaching and learning by providing content for teaching activities, scaffolding, and self-assessment. The paper presents the current results of the development and implementation of a database that is expressly built for promoting exchange of questions and exercises, together with the associated solutions among teachers for STEM subjects. Besides presenting and motivating the initiative (together with reporting its current status), the manuscript lists a series of lessons that have been learned while executing the project - including the need for proper management of authorship and version control of the uploaded …
TEACHING IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION: A CUSTOMIZED PROCESS DRIVEN BY TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS
2020
Automatic knowledge discovery from sparse and large-scale educational data : case Finland
2017
The Finnish educational system has received a lot of attention during the 21st century. Especially, the outstanding results in the first three cycles of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) have made Finland’s education system internationally famous, and its unique characteristics have been under active research by various, predominantly educational, scholars since then. However, despite the availability of real but often sparse big data sets that would allow more evidence-based decision making, existing research to date has mostly concentrated on using classical qualitative and (univariate) quantitative methods. This thesis discusses, in general terms, knowledge discove…
“Sitting at the Stern and Holding the Rudder” : Teachers’ Reflections on Action in Higher Education Based on Student Agency Analytics
2022
Digital technologies in teaching and learning in higher education have the potential to enhance student agency. Student agency is an essential resource to nurture, especially at times when students face challenges emerging from the volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world. In addition, contemporary policymaking has identified the importance of student agency. Student agency analytics is a process utilizing learning analytics, specifically psychometrics and machine learning to provide teachers insights about the agentic resources of their students. Four teachers in higher education were provided with student agency analytics results of their mathematics courses. The teachers partici…
Measuring self‐regulated learning in a junior high school mathematics classroom : Combining aptitude and event measures in digital learning materials
2023
Background Measurement of students' self-regulation skills is an active topic in education research, as effective assessment helps devising support interventions to foster academic achievement. Measures based on event tracing usually require large amounts of data (e.g., MOOCs and large courses), while aptitude measures are often qualitative and need careful interpretation. Precise and interpretable evaluation of self-regulation skills in a normal K-12 classroom thus poses a challenge. Objectives The present study proposes and explores a learning analytics method of combining aptitude and event measures to evaluate student's self-regulation skills. Methods An explorative learning analytics s…
Rethinking Learning Design in IT Education During a Pandemic
2021
Maintaining high-quality teaching and learning in the times of a pandemic poses a huge challenge to education systems. To scaffold adequate practices in our courses during the pandemic, more advanced, and fine-grained “learning design” is needed than providing the learning objectives and learning materials of the course and defining the deliverables and assignments. In this paper, we leverage on our experience with putting into practice different learning designs and technologies, in various information technology (IT) contexts and discuss how IT educators can further reflect on the learning design of their courses and scaffold fully remote or blended learning approaches to accommodate thei…
