Giant magnetic anisotropy energy and coercivity in Fe island and atomic wire on W(110)

We have directly investigated the giant magnetic anisotropy energy and coercivity of monolayer (ML) Fe islands and stripes on flat and stepped W(110) surfaces using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Both for islands and stripes, the magnetic anisotropy energy is $\ensuremath{\sim}$1.0 meV/atom, independent of the coverage below 0.5 ML. On the contrary, the coercive field of the islands rapidly drops from 4.3 T at 0.25 ML to 1.9 T at 0.50 ML, while that of the stripes moderately degrades from 3.5 T at 0.15 ML ($\ensuremath{\sim}$3 atom rows) to 3.0 T at 0.50 ML. Anisotropic double exchange in orbitally degenerate mixed valence systems

Abstract The problem of the double exchange is considered for the mixed valence dimers in which one or both transition metal ions possess orbitally degenerate ground states. In the pseudo-angular momentum representation, the general formula is deduced for the matrix elements of double exchange involving the transfer integrals and all spin and orbital quantum numbers. The pairs 3 T 1 t 2 2 – 2 T 2 t 2 1 and 3 T 1 t 2 2 – 4 A 2 t 2 3 are considered in three high-symmetric topologies: edge-shared D2h, corner-shared D4h, and face-shared D3h bioctahedra. Magnetic states in low-pinning high-anisotropy material nanostructures suitable for dynamic imaging

We present magnetic domain states in a material configuration with high (perpendicular) magnetic anisotropy and particularly low magnetic pinning. This material, a B-doped Co/Pt multilayer configuration, exhibits a strong magnetic contrast in x-ray transmission experiments, making it apt for dynamic imaging with modern synchrotron techniques, providing high spatial and high temporal resolution simultaneously. By analyzing the static spin structures in nanodisks at variable external fields, we show that CoB/Pt multilayers exhibit low enough domain wall pinning to manipulate the domain pattern with weak stimuli and in particular to move domains and domain walls. Reorientation of magnetization states in Fe-nanostripe arrays on stepped W(110) caused by adsorption of CO, H2 and O2

Abstract Fe-Nanostripe arrays of alternating double layer (DL) and monolayer (ML) stripes were grown on stepped W(1 1 0) surfaces by MBE. Magnetic properties were measured in situ in UHV using the polar and longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) during exposure to CO, H2 and O2. The longitudinal Kerr signal increases and the polar signal decreases with increasing exposure of all three gases. A sudden onset of perpendicular remanence was observed at exposures characteristic for each particular gas.
Spin orbit torque switching in Ta/CoFeB/MgO without longitudinal fields

Intense investigations are carried out on novel magnetic materials systems with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), where new spin-orbit effects occur due to structural inversion asymmetry (SIA). So called spin-orbit torques (SOTs), have been observed for the first time in PMA nano-structures with SIA, when an electric current is injected [1-3], leading to ultra-efficient current-induced domain wall motion and current-induced magnetization switching [2,3].
