Out-of-Band Signaling Scheme for High Speed Wireless LANs

2007

In recent years, the physical layer data rate provided by 802.11 Wireless LANs has dramatically increased thanks to significant advances in the modulation and coding techniques employed. However, previous studies show that the 802.11 MAC operation, namely the distributed coordination function (DCF), represents a limiting factor: the throughput efficiency drops as the channel bit rate increases, and a throughput upper limit does indeed exist when the channel bit rate goes to infinite high. These findings indicate that the performance of the DCF protocol will not be efficiently improved by merely increasing the channel bit rate. This paper shows that the DCF performance may significantly bene…

Outage Probability Analysis of User-Centric SBS-Based HCNets Under Hybrid Rician/Rayleigh Fading

2020

To model dense user equipment (UE) distribution in heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNets), the Poisson cluster process (PCP) has emerged as a promising tool. In user-centric HCNets where UEs are distributed according to a PCP around a small base station (SBS), the network performance has been commonly studied in literature under a Rayleigh fading environment assumption. However, such an assumption may not hold in user-centric HCNets given the possible existence of a strong line-of-sight (LOS) link between UEs and BSs due to a relatively short transmission distance. This letter analyzes the performance of user-centric SBS based HCNets by considering that the desired LOS link experiences Ri…

Extrinsic calibration of heterogeneous cameras by line images

2014

International audience; The extrinsic calibration refers to determining the relative pose of cameras. Most of the approaches for cameras with non-overlapping fields of view (FOV) are based on mirror reflection, object tracking or rigidity constraint of stereo systems whereas cameras with overlapping FOV can be calibrated using structure from motion solutions. We propose an extrinsic calibration method within structure from motion framework for cameras with overlapping FOV and its extension to cameras with partially non-overlapping FOV. Recently, omnidirectional vision has become a popular topic in computer vision as an omnidirectional camera can cover large FOV in one image. Combining the g…

Improving Lossless Image Compression with Contextual Memory

2019

With the increased use of image acquisition devices, including cameras and medical imaging instruments, the amount of information ready for long term storage is also growing. In this paper we give a detailed description of the state-of-the-art lossless compression software PAQ8PX applied to grayscale image compression. We propose a new online learning algorithm for predicting the probability of bits from a stream. We then proceed to integrate the algorithm into PAQ8PX&rsquo

Mathematical Learning Opportunities in Kindergarten through the Use of Digital Tools: Affordances and Constraints

2013

Accepted version of an article in the journal: Nordic Journal of Digital Literacy. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/dk/2013/03/mathematical_learning_opportunities_in_kindergarten_through This study aims at scrutinising the mathematical learning opportunities of children engaging with digital tools and the emerging affordances and constraints faced in such settings. By adopting a sociocultural perspective on learning and development, the multimodal analysis of the adult-child interaction shows that the children are participants in processes of appropriating the mathematical concepts of sorting and counting. Affordances are taken advantage of by the adults and cons…

Recent advances of HCI in decision-making tasks for optimized clinical workflows and precision medicine.

2020

The ever-increasing amount of biomedical data is enabling new large-scale studies, even though ad hoc computational solutions are required. The most recent Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques have been achieving outstanding performance and an important impact in clinical research, aiming at precision medicine, as well as improving healthcare workflows. However, the inherent heterogeneity and uncertainty in the healthcare information sources pose new compelling challenges for clinicians in their decision-making tasks. Only the proper combination of AI and human intelligence capabilities, by explicitly taking into account effective and safe interaction paradigms,…

Artificial Intelligence in Protecting Smart Building’s Cloud Service Infrastructure from Cyberattacks

2020

Gathering and utilizing stored data is gaining popularity and has become a crucial component of smart building infrastructure. The data collected can be stored, for example, into private, public, or hybrid cloud service infrastructure or distributed service by utilizing data platforms. The stored data can be used when implementing services, such as building automation (BAS). Cloud services, IoT sensors, and data platforms can face several kinds of cybersecurity attack vectors such as adversarial, AI-based, DoS/DDoS, insider attacks. If a perpetrator can penetrate the defenses of a data platform, she can cause significant harm to the system. For example, the perpetrator can disrupt a buildin…

Exudates as Landmarks Identified through FCM Clustering in Retinal Images

2020

The aim of this work was to develop a method for the automatic identification of exudates, using an unsupervised clustering approach. The ability to classify each pixel as belonging to an eventual exudate, as a warning of disease, allows for the tracking of a patient&rsquo

Smart Mobility Trends: Open Data and Other Tools

2018

The Strategic Implementation Plan for speeding up the transformation of European Cities into "Smart cities" establishes 6 Actions Clusters and 11 Priority Areas. Some of them are directly related to the transport and sustainable urban mobility. The main goal is the application of new technologies to minimize the loss of time and energy, and to improve the satisfaction of citizens. The use and reuse of information as open data, already collected from the Public Administration and private entities is a source of possibilities adding extra value. Technologies such as Bluetooth sensors, Open Data platforms etc., become essential elements to achieve this goal. This paper highlights the opportuni…

2016

Information and communication are at the core of the intelligent city of tomorrow, and the key components of a smart city cannot prescind from data exchanges and interconnectedness. Citizen communication is an integral part of the smart city’s development plans: freedom of information and involvement in collective decisions, e-democracy and decision-making feedback can be greatly enhanced in an intelligent city, and, among other smart city components, foster a new era of participation and wise decisions. In this contribution we describe the methodologies that can be implemented in order to correctly develop automatic recognition systems for citizen communication, paying special attention to…
