Localization of Multi-Class On-Road and Aerial Targets Using mmWave FMCW Radar
2021
mmWave radars play a vital role in autonomous systems, such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), ground station control and monitoring systems. The challenging task when using mmWave radars is to estimate the accurate angle of arrival (AoA) of the targets, due to the limited number of receivers. In this paper, we present a novel AoA estimation technique, using mmWave FMCW radars operating in the frequency range 77–81 GHz by utilizing the mechanical rotation. Rotating the radar also increases the field of view in both azimuth and elevation. The proposed method estimates the AoA of the targets, using only a single transmitter and receiver. The measurements are…
Classification of Targets Using Statistical Features from Range FFT of mmWave FMCW Radars
2021
Radars with mmWave frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technology accurately estimate the range and velocity of targets in their field of view (FoV). The targeted angle of arrival (AoA) estimation can be improved by increasing receiving antennas or by using multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). However, obtaining target features such as target type remains challenging. In this paper, we present a novel target classification method based on machine learning and features extracted from a range fast Fourier transform (FFT) profile by using mmWave FMCW radars operating in the frequency range of 77–81 GHz. The measurements are carried out in a variety of realistic situations, including p…
Non-Linear Inductor Models Comparison for Switched-Mode Power Supplies Applications
2022
The use of non-linear power inductors, intended as devices exploited up to a current at which the inductance is halved, is of great interest in switched-mode power supplies (SMPSs). Indeed, it allows the use of lighter and cheaper inductors improving the power density. On the other hand, the analysis of SMPSs equipped with non-linear inductors requires appropriate modeling of the inductor reproducing the inductance versus current. This paper compares two main analytical models proposed in the literature: the former is based on a polynomial, and the latter exploits the arctangent function to reproduce the non-linearity of the inductance. Performance is compared by considering the effort of r…
Conocimiento, traza e ingenio en la arquitectura valenciana del siglo XV
2012
In the last decades historiography of gothic architecture in the Crown of Aragon has focused on buildings monographs, documentary research and technical change in stone building. On the other hand, historians of technology have given special attention to the issue of innovation and its diffusion in the late Middle Ages, considering building techniques as a particular field of research. This essay studies transmission of technical knowledge in building trades in order to explain architectural changes in an outstanding environment of innovation such as the kingdom of Valencia in the 14th and 15th centuries, especially from 1430 onwards. Having account of previous research and some cases of st…
In balia del mare e delle onde. Architetture, culture e territori
2014
Thanks to some autobiographical memories, Andrea Sciascia thinks back to the places and themes explored in the laboratories of architectural and urban design by Giuseppe Di Benedetto, Adriana Sarro and Gianfranco Tuzzolino. The short holiday periods spent when he was a child in Lampedusa and the teaching methology and the research about multiethnic town, carried out with Pasquale Culotta, constitute a system of reference thanks to which Sciascia manages to frame the work of the three teachers of Palermo according to traditional studies at the Faculty of Architecture of Palermo. The essay establishes a network of relationships between some of the latest results of the teaching of architectur…
Design and implementation of the AMIGA embedded system for data acquisition

The successful installation, commissioning, and operation of the Pierre Auger Observatory would not have been possible without the strong commitment and effort from the technical and admin-istrative staff in Malargtie. We are very grateful to the following agencies and organizations for financial support: Comision Nacional de Energla Atomica, Agencia Nacional de Promocion Cientffica y Tec-nologica (ANPCyT) , Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Cientfficas y Tecnicas (CONICET) , Gobierno de la Provincia de Mendoza, Municipalidad de Malargtie, NDM Holdings and Valle Las Leilas, in gratitude for their continuing cooperation over land access, Argentina; the Australian Research Council; Conselho…
Bone Mass Distribution in the Sacrum
2017
The trabecular architecture and bone mass distribution of each bone follows biomechanical principles and is an adaption to the stress exhibited during lifetime. In patients with osteoporosis, the bone mass decreases and the bone microarchitecture changes. A distinct bone mass distribution in non-osteoporotic and osteoporotic individuals is demonstrated using statistical modelling in the sacrum. The authors studied the sacral bone mass distribution using a 3D statistical model based on clinical CT scans of 92 Europeans. In the group with worse general bone mass (less than 100 Houndsfeld Units (HU) measured in the body of L5), there were large areas of negative HU in the sacral alae. These “a…
LA "MACCHINA MUSEALE" PER LA RIQUALIFICAZIONE E LA VALORIZZAZIONE DEL CENTRO DI LEONFORTE
2005
Tenendo conto d…
All Eyes on Me : Behaving as Soloist in Duo Performances Leads to Increased Body Movements and Attracts Observers’ Visual Attention
2020
Duo musicians exhibit a broad variety of bodily gestures, but it is unclear how soloists’ and accompanists’ movements differ and to what extent they attract observers’ visual attention. In Experiment 1, seven musical duos’ body movements were tracked while they performed two pieces in two different conditions. In a congruent condition, soloist and accompanist behaved according to their expected musical roles; in an incongruent condition, the soloist behaved as accompanist and vice versa. Results revealed that behaving as soloist, regardless of the condition, led to more, smoother, and faster head and shoulder movements over a larger area than behaving as accompanist. Moreover, accompanists …
Programmable surface-architectures derived from hybrid polyoxometalate-based clusters
2011
The exploration of the self-organization of a range of the polyoxometalate-based molecular structures reveals a diverse range of surface patterns and morphologies on solid substrates of technological interest, including methylated and hydroxylated silicon surfaces (namely, SiCH3 and SiOH). By exploiting the interplay between the intrinsic molecular properties and the surface chemistry as well as dynamic spatiotemporal phenomena (e.g., dewetting), we show that these systems can yield 0D, 2D, and 3D architectures via solution deposition at the solid surface, including nanodots, discs, lamellas, porous networks, and layer-by-layer assemblies. In general, we observed that layer-by-layer growth …
