As a linguistic term, diathesis first occurs in the definition of verb given in the treatise on grammar attributed to Dionysius Thrax. There its value intersects those of activeness and affectedness with the result that it designates both semantic and formal properties. In restricting the analysis to the author of this treatise on grammar, whoever he may have been, the paper investigates the origin of diathesis as a linguistic term. The data gathered suggest that the term was originally taken from Aristotle's thought. Of course, how the value of diathesis then developed can also be outlined. The essay links the circular time of festivals with the theoretical activity of philosophy. To this goal, it examines the relation among play, festival, and experience of truth in Gadamer starting with a confrontation between Aristotle’s conception of the relation between play and philosophy and Gadamer’s own conception. The essay then shows how, by focusing anew on the religious origin of holidays, Perone further develops the temporal character of philosophy, which unfolds precisely in philosophy’s unavoidable tension with the eternal.
Extending the Limits of Nature. Political Animals, Artefacts, and Social Institutions

This essay discusses how medieval authors from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries dealt with a philosophical problem that social institutions pose for the Aristotelian dichotomy between natural and artificial entities. It is argued that marriage, political community, and language provided a particular challenge for the conception that things which are designed by human beings are artefacts. Medieval philosophers based their arguments for the naturalness of social institutions on the anthropological view that human beings are political animals by nature, but this strategy required rethinking the borderline between nature and art. Aristotle’s Doctrine of Causes and the Manipulative Theory of Causality

I will argue for the similarity between some aspects of Aristotle’s doctrine of causes and a particular kind of interventionist theory of causality. The interventionist account hypothesizes that there is a connection between causation and human intervention: the idea of a causal relation between two events is generated by the reflection of human beings on their own operating. This view is remindful of the Aristotelian concept of αἴτιον (cause), which is linked to the figure of the αἴτιος, the person who is responsible of an action. Se pretende llamar la atención sobre un par de frases que aparecen justo hacia la mitad de la controvertida doxografía de Aristóteles que se puede leer en las Vidas y doctrinas de los filósofos más ilustres de Diógenes Laercio V 31, y que desde luego no corresponden a ningún sistema doxográfico conocido. Como sucede no pocas veces en la obra laerciana, la misma apreciación sobre si el filósofo debe o no enamorarse y contraer matrimonio se repite idéntica en otras doxografías completamente distintas: la cirenaica (DL II 91), la estoica (DL VII 129) y la epicúrea (DL X 118).
