2015

The conquest of Europe, first by Napoleon and then by Hitler, was accompanied by the systematic plunder of artistic works. This tactic was in keeping with the logic of classical warfare, aiming, in other words, to humiliate the vanquished and exalt the victors. Recent publications enable us to investigate this phenomenon anew. Art is undeniably at the heart of the symbolic systems of authoritarian states, and the artistic choices are very revealing as to the nature of those regimes. When the conflict is over, the restitution of the plundered works of art gives rise to important questions in the ransacked countries, leading to a reflection on their own heritage and therefore on their identit…

Music, Architecture, Proportion and the Renaissance Way of Thinking

2020

During the Renaissance, the language of proportion became a unified theory capable of encompassing the understanding of the world within a coherent theological, philosophical and artistic framework. Music, with its harmonic paradigm, plays a key role in this construction. From the fifteenth century through to the end of the sixteenth century, architects and architectural theorists made reference, both in new treatises and commentaries to Vitruvius, to musical matters, transforming architecture into the summa of knowledge. The affinity to music was grounded on both a common mathematical and rhetoric gnosiology. Formerly conceived of as ideal, numbers became eloquent, reinforcing the quantita…

Lignes et points : Illustration, impressionnisme littéraire et procédés

2020

2015

"Buen viaje, excelencia" (Albert Boadella, 2003) is a satirical fiction presenting iconoclasts looks crossed on the last days of Franco. Like a modern Don Quixote, the dictator appears enclosed and private of his reason in the imaginary world of his warriors memorabilia. The German psychiatrist who takes care of him makes the viewer share a look at the grotesque of a regime that is dying. Relatives of the dictator are portrayed as a group of predatory hypocrites, submitted before the warlord but anxious to recover his inheritance. Boadella thus proposes a look back at the end of the dictatorship, too corrosive perhaps according to its sparse distribution.
