2008

This article deals with ¿Quién puede matar a un niño? directed by Narciso Ibáñez Serrador, more famous thanks to his TV film series Historias para no dormir. In this film, children use to play an essential part in the development of a pure fantastic style (in Todorov’s terms), i.e. based on the irruption of unexplainable elements inside a perfectly normal realistic context. As some critics as Rosset have pointed out, the feeling of anguish does arise from such a realistic context, from that otherness within the child, the human being we are more reluctant to fear, the one we hardly view with suspicion Este artículo trata de la obra de Narciso Ibáñez Serrador y, en particular, de uno de sus …

2022

This article explores the issues at stakes in defining the narrative caption. As a starting point, it reviews usual definitions which combine a functional component (the caption provides a certain kind of information), a graphic component (that characterizes it as a space) and an enunciative component (the text which conveys the narrator’s voice) are combined. The article distingues between two objects: on the one hand the text box as a peripheral space in relation to the panel, on the other hand the caption as a textual element. In order to avoid the disputed concept of narrator and to include a wider set of texts, the caption as a text is defined by its lack of deictic anchoring in the im…

Proportions. Science, Musique, Peinture et Architecture

2012

2011

Comparative linguistics seems to suggest that the gap between two languages can be filled by grammar. But mapping the structural gaps between languages hardly makes for the more fundamental gap that is created by the writing of a new text, a supposedly identical addendum to the first. Writing that new text entails questions about the nature of texts, their intentions, their interpretations. Translation must therefore develop a hermeneutical approach. This critical stance is about sorting out what belongs to the languages and what belongs to the text as a specific unit, as a cultural and authorial unit. Because of its cultural nature, translation questions the way one can carry meaning acros…

Fascinating Rhythm : Traduire le substrat musical dans Another Country de James Baldwin

2014

Baldwin’s Another Country is a deeply rhythmic novel, developing its musical theme through its characters and openly claiming its debt towards musical expression. Is it possible to translate this form of musical mimesis? The question involves taking into account comparative phonology and stylistics as well as the study of the linguistic means by which writing can create a rhythmic feel (repetitions, alliterations, rhymes, similarity of words, etc.). Rhythm and music are connected to deeper historical and social questions. For example preachin’ as a form of speech stands out as part of cultural stylistics. The study of the novel’s French translation sets off these dimensions of the original …

David Cronenberg : une mission utopique

2002

This essay is meant as an introduction to the body of Cronenberg's work up to and including Spider. It is an attempt to analyze what Cronenberg calls his mission in aesthetic and ethical terms, Cronenberg having admitted to Serge Grünberg that he wanted to participate in changing contemporary norms by encouraging the spectator to see something beautiful when his initial reaction is repulsion. I argue that the utopian/dystopian aspect of the diegeses of Cronenberg's early films becomes a structuring element in his later films. I first examine Cronenberg's approach to the fantastique in Shivers and Rabid, with particular interest to the monster as a metaphor of the repulsive. In the later fil…
