Granulation of fly ash and biochar with organic lake sediments – A way to sustainable utilization of waste from bioenergy production

2019

Abstract The main waste generated during the thermochemical processes of biomass burning used for bioenergy production in cogeneration plants are ash and biochar which can be used as fertilizers in forestry and agriculture. However, several difficulties are attributed to possibilities of practical exploitation of ash and biochar due to the transporting, handling and mode of application. Granulation of energy generation waste has been shown in some circumstances as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method. Production of granules (pellets) from wood ash and biochar leads to improved recycling and logistics of waste as well as helps to control and avoid undesirable environmental ef…

Quantitative Estimation of Major and Trace Elements in Coals of the Benue Trough, Nigeria

2013

The concentrations of major and trace elements in ash residues of coals of the Benue Trough, Nigeria have been determined by electron microprobe and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, respectively. Major and trace element determination in rocks by fusion on an iridium strip heater followed by electron microprobe and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry is extended here to coal ash, and the accuracy of the method is evaluated by including an Argonne Premium Coal reference sample in each analysis program. Si and Al are the major elements detected in the coal ashes. An assessment using worldwide concentration ranges of trace elements in coal ash…

Data on physical and chemical characterization of wood combustion products derived at cogeneration power plants

2021

The data presented in this article are related to the research paper “Granulation of fly ash and biochar with organic lake sediments – A way to sustainable utilization of waste from bioenergy production” [1] in the context of waste material investigation and possible valorization instead of disposal. This article provides a comprehensive chemical and physical characterization of wood combustion products – fly ashes, bottom ashes, mixed ashes and biochar. Multiple analytical techniques and methodology were exploited to investigate the composition of wood combustion products, among them a loss on ignition, potentiometry, colorimetry, X-ray diffractometry, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, indu…

Study of energetic properties of different tree organs in six Olea europaea L. cultivars

2021

AbstractPruning is an important horticultural practice for the management of olive orchards (Olea europaea L.) that generates a considerable amount of residues every year. Olive orchards are increasingly expanding beyond the Mediterranean Basin to new growing Countries (Australia, California, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay) and this will certainly lead to larger availability of pruning material. Currently, the interest in use of olive tree pruning residues for energy purposes is increasing but unfortunately, the information on the differences among organs of the tree, in terms of calorific value and ash content, is scarce. Another unknown aspect is the effect of cultivar vigour on dry matter …

Novel biomass fly ash-based geopolymeric mortars using lime slaker grits as aggregate for applications in construction: Influence of granulometry and…

2019

Abstract This work discusses the influence of the aggregate granulometry and the binder/aggregate ratio on the engineering properties of novel green geopolymeric mortars. Two wastes generated by a Portuguese Kraft pulp industry are employed to manufacture the material: lime slaker grits (used as aggregate) and biomass fly ash (to partially replace the metakaolin − 70 wt% substitution). The novel geopolymeric mortars could find innovative applications as sustainable construction materials. The studied mix design foresees the use of several grits granulometric ranges and ratios binder/aggregate to discuss workability, water sorptivity, and mechanical performance of the novel mortars. To date,…

Reliability of physical functioning measures in ambulatory subjects with MS.

2005

Background and Purpose. One of the primary reasons for measuring outcomes during rehabilitation is to determine the effect of physiotherapy. Repeated measurement situations are susceptible to several sources of error, including inconsistencies caused by the subject, the procedure, the instrument and the examiner. Therefore, the reliability of the measures needs to be examined. Method. The present study used a repeated-measures design. Two studies were undertaken to examine the test–retest and inter-rater reliability for physical functioning measures. The interval between the measurements was one week. The sample consisted of 19 ambulatory subjects with mutliple sclerosis (MS) in the test–re…

Labile carbon alleviates wood ash effects on soil fauna

2008

The combined effects of wood ash, sucrose and oxalic acid on enchytraeid size and biomass, the abundance of microbial-feeding nematodes and pH were studied in a full three-factorial design in laboratory microcosms containing 30 g of Norway spruce forest humus. Wood ash treatment reduced enchytraeid size and abundance, but these effects were offset by sucrose without any change in pH or moisture. The positive effects of sucrose were partially counteracted by oxalic acid. Both carbon compounds increased the abundance of obligate microbial-feeding nematodes, indicating enhanced microbial production.

Multi criteria evaluation of a sustainable alkali-activated concrete

2019

The construction industry is one of the most polluting sectors worldwide. In order to reduce the environmental footprint, novel green materials and processes are being considered by valorising and reusing wastes. This work investigates the production of a novel and sustainable geopolymeric concrete reusing biomass fly ash from kraft paper-pulp industry. In particular, this paper aims to evaluate the best combination of the aggregate granulometry used in the material production. For this purpose, the multicriteria method TOPSIS has been implemented in order to obtain a rank of the concrete specimens. In this approach only mechanical aspects have been considered and future developments will i…
