State and parameter update in a coupled energy/hydrologic balance model using ensemble Kalman filtering

2012

Summary The capability to accurately monitor and describe daily evapotranspiration (ET) in a cost effective manner is generally attributed to hydrological models. However, continuous solution of energy and water balance provides precise estimations only when a detailed knowledge of sub-surface characteristics is available. On the other hand, residual surface energy balance models, based on remote observation of land surface temperature, are characterised by sufficient accuracy, but their applicability is limited by the lack of high frequency and high resolution thermal data. A compromise between these two methodologies is represented by the use of data assimilation scheme to include sparse …

Antroponymie potomků zelówských Čechů

2016

The initial part of the article presents a brief history of Czech people in Polish Zelów as well as characteristics of this group of residents. The main part concerns description of names of descendants of Czech residents of Zelów. Material for analysis comes from tombstone inscriptions of the cemetery of the Evangelical-Reformed parish in Zelów. Authoress emphasizes that on the one hand anthroponyms reflect history, culture, and realities of life and on the other hand contacts with other nations. In this regard, she indicates those elements that attest to Czech continuum and characteristics of the phenomenon of linguistic and cultural assimilation of this group of Zelów’s residents.

Towards a new generation of high-resolution meteorological input data for small-scale hydrologic modeling

2011

Summary Current and future challenges of hydrologic sciences are to accurately predict and assess climate-driven impacts on water resources for the relevant scales of planning. However, process-based small-scale hydrologic modeling is data demanding and large uncertainties exist in data-sparse areas. The aim of our study was to test the applicability of the COSMO-DE analysis data (COSMO-DE-A) for hydrologic modeling. COSMO-DE-A data are a new meteorological data set with high temporal and spatial resolution that originates from the German Weather Service data assimilation system using the COSMO-DE weather prediction model. We collected field parameters in a small (10 km 2 ) mountainous catc…

Grain legume seed filling in relation to nitrogen acquisition: A review and prospects with particular reference to pea

2001

International audience; Seed filling depends not only on the instantaneous supply of C and N, but also on their remobilisation from vegetative organs. C supply during seed filling depends mostly on current photosynthesis, but N assimilation and N$_2$ fixation decline during seed filling, with newly acquired N generally insufficient for the high seed demand. As seeds are strong sinks for mobilised nutrients, seed growth becomes metabolically closely associated with N remobilisation. N remobilisation from vegetative tissues to filling seeds interacts with photosynthesis since it induces senescence, which reduces the seed filling period. Hence improved grain legume seed filling requires either…

Frugalità nella letteratura

2022

The essay proposes a reflection on the discourse around "frugality" from the perspective of Cultural Geography, taking into…

Simulation of surface energy fluxes and meteorological variables using the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS): Evaluating the impact of land…

2018

Atmospheric mesoscale numerical models are commonly used not only for research and air quality studies, but also for other related applications, such as short-term weather forecasting for atmospheric, hydrological, agricultural and ecological modelling. A key element to produce faithful simulations is the proper representation of the soil parameters used in the initialization of the corresponding mesoscale numerical model. The Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) is used in the current study. The model code has been updated in order to permit the model to be initialized using a heterogeneous soil moisture and temperature distribution derived from land surface models. Particularly, RA…

Concepts for a Theoretical Biology

2015

Waddington is the father of Theoretical Biology and many concepts that are now the common currency of Biology-based language were coined by him, such as channelling, robustness or epigenetics. Waddington believes it is essential to work on a theory of the phenotype. The deployment of genotype to give rise to phenotype brings into play many of the laws required to formulate a theory of life. In recent times, Waddington is the best example of an advocate of cell theory; however, he was not in favour of a gene-centred approach to the study of biological evolution.

Le minoranze nazionali e i gruppi etnici in Ucraina come parte della questione linguistico-identitaria

2022

The article aims at illustrating the linguistic situation of national minorities and ethnic groups in independent Ukraine. It describes the historical context in which minority groups in Ukraine were formed, as well as the main language identity issues that Ukraine had to face before and after 1991. The socio-political dynamics in which minorities lived in the first decades after 1991 are described. The main part outlines the situation of major minorities, provides data concerning the variation of specific groups and underlines how these numerical fluctuations have affected the linguistic situation of the country. The article takes into consideration statistical data, scientific articles an…

DifferingDaphnia magnaassimilation efficiencies for terrestrial, bacterial, and algal carbon and fatty acids

2014

There is considerable interest in the pathways by which carbon and growth-limiting elemental and biochemical nutrients are supplied to upper trophic levels. Fatty acids and sterols are among the most important molecules transferred across the plant-animal interface of food webs. In lake ecosystems, in addition to phytoplankton, bacteria and terrestrial organic matter are potential trophic resources for zooplankton, especially in those receiving high terrestrial organic matter inputs. We therefore tested carbon, nitrogen, and fatty acid assimilation by the crustacean Daphnia magna when consuming these resources. We fed Daphnia with monospecific diets of high-quality (Cryptomonas marssonii) a…
