Exploring the Life Form of a Student Athlete Afforded by a Dual Career Development Environment in Finland

2020

The current paper introduces a case study conducted in one of the most well-established athletic talent development environments in Finland, with the focus on the environment’s ecological dynamics and organizational culture, in light of its recent effort to rebrand itself as a dual career development environment. Our analysis has been inspired by the holistic ecological approach and ecological dynamics, wherein the authors have considered a dual career development environment from the point of view of its transactions with agentic individuals and affordances for student athletes in the study domain, the sports domain, and the private domain. The authors believe our findings can provide othe…

A taxonomy of dual career development environments in European countries

2020

Research question. The last decade has seen an increase in empirical research associated with dual careers in sport, with a particular focus on understanding and developing individual characteristics which are important to ensure success in sports and education or a vocation. More recent work has, however, also identified the importance of environmental factors in ensuring successful dual career outcomes. The aims of this study, therefore, are to: (a) identify and classify the different types of dual career development environments (DCDEs) and (b) provide outlines of the key features of the environments identified. Research methods. To achieve these aims, this study adopted the procedure of…

Prevalence of relative energy deficiency in sport among well-trained male Norwegian cyclists and long-distance runners

2016

Masteroppgave i idrettsvitenskap - Universitetet i Agder 2016 Introduction Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) links low and reduced energy availability (EA) with negative health and performance consequences, though not well investigated in male endurance athletes. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of RED-S and associated health consequences in well-trained male endurance athletes. Methods Forty-one subjects, cyclists (n=21) and runners (n=20) [age: 40 (31-45) years; BMI: 23.5 (21.4-24.0) kg/m2; body-fat: 14.0% (10.0-16.5%); training volume: 12 (9-16) h/week presented as median + interquartile range] were recruited. Protocol included assessment of bone health, …

A person-oriented approach to sport and school burnout in adolescent student-athletes: The role of individual and parental expectations

2017

Abstract Objectives The present study aimed to examine what kind of burnout profiles exist among student-athletes based on their sport and school burnout symptoms. Moreover, it was investigated whether athletes' expectations of success in sport and school, on the one hand, and parental expectations, on the other hand, were predictors of the likelihood of the athlete to show a certain profile, after taking into account the effects of gender, grade point average, type of sport, and level of competition. Design and methods The participants were 391 student-athletes (51% females) from six different upper secondary sport schools in Finland, and 448 parents (58% mothers). The athletes filled in q…

Psychological Research on Martial Artists

2012

In this article, we problematize sport psychology research on martial artists and offer some suggestions for advancing our knowledge in this area of research and practice. First, we review the previous research in the field. Then we introduce “cultural praxis” as a theoretical framework that will guide our analysis. Finally, we engage sociological studies of female fighters in conjunction with the adopted theoretical lens to outline the limitations of sport psychological research with regards to the experiences of women. It seems that the majority of the studies have used the male athlete as the norm, while research on the female athlete remains limited and focused on “differences”. Focusin…

Acute HIT session induced changes and recovery in muscle activation level, voluntary force production and jump performance during 8 weeks of HIT trai…

2017

High-intensity interval training (HIT) has gained wide popularity among competitive athletes and sport enthusiasts in the recent decades. While an extensive amount of research has been done on acute neuromuscular (NM) response and recovery after low-moderate intensity endurance training, the data regarding HIT in recreational athletes remains to be limited. In order to reduce that gap, the present study investigated the acute HIT session induced changes and recovery in muscle activation level, voluntary force production and counter movement jump performance during 8 weeks of HIT training in recreationally endurance trained men. A total of 9 subjects age 30.7 years (± 5.8), participated in t…

Clima motivacional percibido, motivación autodeterminada y autoestima en jóvenes deportistas mexicanos

2010

Participaron 651 deportistas juveniles mexicanos (Medad = 13,99; DT = 1,88), 330 chicas y 321 ch…

Stress, Professional Lifestyle, and Telomere Biology in Elite Athletes: A Growing Trend in Psychophysiology of Sport

2020

Professional lifestyle and championship period often put a great deal of pressure on athletes, who usually experience highly stressful periods during training for competitions. Recently, biomarkers of cellular aging, telomere length (TL) and telomerase activity (TA), have been considered to investigate the effects of stress and lifestyle factors. Studies in non-athletic populations have shown that stress and poor lifestyle decrease TL and TA. On the other hand, it has been shown that in general, exercise increases TL and its activity, although the underlying mechanisms remained largely unexplored. TL and TA outcomes in elite athletes remain inconclusive and mainly affected by confounding fa…

The Influence of Fatigue on Throwing and YBT-UQ Performance in Male Adolescent Handball Players

2020

Purpose: The goal of the present study was to assess the effects of fatigue on throwing and Upper Quarter Y Balance Test (YBT-UQ) performance in male adolescent handball players. We hypothesized that throwing and YBT-UQ performance will be decreased in response to an upper-body fatigue-protocol.Method: All male participants (N = 24, age: 14.8 ± 0.7 yrs) were handball players of a regional youth selection team. A radar gun was used for the assessment of throwing velocity. The YBT-UQ was executed assessing medial, inferolateral and superolateral reach directions normalized to the upper limb length together with a composite score. Immediately following a fatigue protocol of different sets of p…
