High-sensitivity troponin assay improves prediction of cardiovascular risk in patients with cerebral ischaemia

2013

Background and purpose Clinical scores are recommended for predicting cardiovascular risk in patients with cerebral ischaemia to inform secondary prevention. Blood biomarkers may improve prediction beyond clinical scores. Methods Within the observational Find-AF trial (ISRCTN46104198), 197 patients >18 years of age with cerebral ischaemia and without atrial fibrillation had blood sampled at baseline. The predictive value of five biomarkers for a combined vascular endpoint (acute coronary syndrome, stroke, cardiovascular death) and all-cause mortality was determined, alone and in addition to the Essen Stroke Risk Score (ESRS), Stroke Prognostic Instrument 2 (SPI-2) and National Institutes of…

Infant-Mother Attachment Can Be Improved through Group Intervention: A Preliminary Evaluation in Spain in a Non-Randomized Controlled Trial

2011

The quality of infant-mother attachment has been linked to competence in different domains of child development. Research indicates that early intervention can enhance the quality of infant-mother attachment, though its efficacy in a group format has yet to be evaluated. The current study is aimed at examining the usefulness of a group intervention in enhancing infant-mother attachment. An intervention aimed at addressing aspects such as maternal responsivity, sensitivity and childrearing behaviour was developed by the researchers and experienced psychologists. The intervention spanned a period of 14 months starting from the third quarter of pregnancy. The intervention was evaluated among 2…

Healing of intrabony defects following treatment with a bovine-derived xenograft and collagen membrane

2003

The mediating role of perceived peer support in the relation between quality of attachment and internalizing problems in adolescence: a longitudinal …

2016

The study was aimed to verify, from a longitudinal perspective, whether perceived peer support would mediate the relationship between attachment and internalizing problems. Longitudinal participants included 482 adolescents (245 boys) aged 14–15 years in Wave 1 and 17–18 years in Wave 2. Participants in Wave 1 completed the Relationship Questionnaire, and those in Wave 2 completed the Social Support Questionnaire and the Youth Self-Report. Results showed that secure attachment positively predicted high levels of 15 perceived peer support and negatively predicted internalizing problems, whereas fearful and preoccupied attachment negatively predicted perceived peer support and positively pred…

The Riga East University Hospital Stroke Registry—An Analysis of 4915 Consecutive Patients with Acute Stroke

2021

Background and Objectives: A hospital-based stroke registry is a useful tool for systematic analyses of the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and natural course of stroke. Analyses of stroke registry data can provide information that can be used by health services to improve the quality of care for patients with this disease. Materials and Methods: Data were collected from the Riga East University Hospital (REUH) Stroke Registry in order to evaluate the etiology, risk factors, clinical manifestations, treatment, functional outcomes, and other relevant data for acute stroke during the period 2016–2020. Results: During a five-year period, 4915 patients (3039 females and 1876 males) with…

Neuroprotection and glutamate attenuation by acetylsalicylic acid in temporary but not in permanent cerebral ischemia.

2007

To assess the effects of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) on glutamate and interleukin-6 (IL-6) release in the striatum of rats suffering from cerebral ischemia, we used the microdialysis technique with probes implanted 2 h prior to stroke onset. A total of 36 rats were randomly assigned to either temporary (90 min, n = 18) or permanent (n = 18) middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Animals received either a bolus of 40 mg/kg ASA or saline as control 30 min after stroke onset. Permanent MCAO led to large infarct volumes with no differences between treatment with ASA (239.8 ± 4.1 mm3) and saline (230.1 ± 3.9 mm3, p = 0.15). In contrast, ASA therapy in temporary ischemia (87.2 ± 6.2 mm3) reduced…

Proliferative response of cells of the dentogingival junction to mechanical stimulation

2001

SUMMARY The aim of this research was to study the proliferative response of junctional epithelium (JE) and gingival connective tissue (GCT) to mechanical stimulation in vivo with regard to the potential occurrence of apical migration of JE and loss of GCT attachment during orthodontic tooth movement. Elastic bands were inserted between the maxillary first and second molars of male rats aged 8 weeks, which were pulse-labelled with 3 H-thymidine and subsequently killed in groups, together with labelled control animals (a total of 98 rats) after periods of 1‐168 hours. Autoradiographs were prepared from plastic mesiodistal sections, and parameters of cell proliferation for JE and GCT of the pa…

Management of shortened dental arches and periodontal health: 5-year results of a randomised trial

2014

Summary In a multicentre randomised trial (German Research Association, grants DFG WA 831/2-1 to 2-6, WO 677/2-1.1 to 2-2.1.; controlled-trials.com ISRCTN97265367), patients with complete molar loss in one jaw received either a partial removable dental prosthesis (PRDP) with precision attachments or treatment according to the SDA concept aiming at pre-molar occlusion. The objective of this current analysis was to evaluate the influence of different treatments on periodontal health. Linear mixed regression models were fitted to quantify the differences between the treatment groups. The assessment at 5 years encompassed 59 patients (PRDP group) and 46 patients (SDA group). For the distal meas…

Reduction of infarct size by the NO donors sodium nitroprusside and spermine/NO after transient focal cerebral ischemia in rats

2000

Nitric oxide (NO) plays a dual role (neuroprotection and neurotoxicity) in cerebral ischemia. NO promoting strategies may be beneficial shortly after ischemia. Therefore, we have studied the hemodynamic and possible neuroprotective effects of two NO donors, the classical nitrovasodilator sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and the NONOate spermine/NO, after transient focal cerebral ischemia in rats. Parietal cortical perfusion was measured by laser-Doppler flowmetry. The effects of increasing intravenous doses (10-300 microgram) of sodium nitroprusside and spermine/NO on cortical perfusion and arterial blood pressure were assessed. Transient (2 h) focal cerebral ischemia was carried out by the intra…

Tolerance-Inducing Dose of 3-Nitropropionic Acid Modulates bcl-2 and bax Balance in the Rat Brain: A Potential Mechanism of Chemical Preconditioning

2000

Many studies have reported ischemia protection using various preconditioning techniques, including single dose 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NPA), a mitochondrial toxin. However, the cellular signal transduction cascades resulting in ischemic tolerance and the mechanisms involved in neuronal survival in the tolerant state still remain unclear. The current study investigated the mRNA and protein expression of the antiapoptotic bcl-2 and the proapoptotic bax, two antagonistic members of the bcl-2 gene family, in response to a single dose of 3-NPA, to global cerebral ischemia–reperfusion, and to the combination of both 3-NPA-pretreatment and subsequent global cerebral ischemia–reperfusion. Brain h…
