Cortisol suppression and hearing thresholds in tinnitus after low-dose dexamethasone challenge

2012

Abstract Background Tinnitus is a frequent, debilitating hearing disorder associated with severe emotional and psychological suffering. Although a link between stress and tinnitus has been widely recognized, the empirical evidence is scant. Our aims were to test for dysregulation of the stress-related hypothalamus-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis in tinnitus and to examine ear sensitivity variations with cortisol manipulation. Methods Twenty-one tinnitus participants and 21 controls comparable in age, education, and overall health status but without tinnitus underwent basal cortisol assessments on three non-consecutive days and took 0.5 mg of dexamethasone (DEX) at 23:00 on the first day. Corti…

Orthogonal switching of AMS axes during type-2 fold interference : Insights from integrated X-ray computed tomography, AMS and 3D petrography

2017

We applied X-ray computed microtomography (μ-CT) in combination with anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) analysis to study metamorphic rock fabrics in an oriented drill core sample of pyrite-pyrrhotite-quartz-mica schist. The sample is extracted from the Paleoproterozoic Martimo metasedimentary belt of northern Finland. The μ-CT resolves the spatial distribution, shape and orientation of 25,920 pyrrhotite and 153 pyrite grains localized in mm-thick metapelitic laminae. Together with microstructural analysis, the μ-CT allows us to interpret the prolate symmetry of the AMS ellipsoid and its relationship to the deformation history. AMS of the sample is controlled by pyrrhotite porphyro…

Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis and cognitive function in healthy older people: genetic, situational and individual factors

2019

The world population is getting older, and this age group faces important health challenges, among which age-related cognitive decline stands out. Therefore, it is important to identify vulnerability and protective health factors in order to understand ways to prevent cognitive decline. This thesis aimed to address the relationship between the Hypothalamic–Pituitary–Adrenal (HPA) axis and cognitive functioning during aging, taking into account genetic (Apolipoprotein E, ApoE, polymorphism), situational (loneliness), and individual factors (personality traits). To do this, a group of healthy older people over 55 years of age, men and women, were evaluated. A neuropsychological battery was ad…

Jet fragmentation transverse momentum distributions in pp and p-Pb collisions at √s, √sNN = 5.02 TeV

2021

Jet fragmentation transverse momentum (jT) distributions are measured in proton-proton (pp) and proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. Jets are reconstructed with the ALICE tracking detectors and electromagnetic calorimeter using the anti-kT algorithm with resolution parameter R = 0.4 in the pseudorapidity range |η| < 0.25. The jT values are calculated for charged particles inside a fixed cone with a radius R = 0.4 around the reconstructed jet axis. The measured jT distributions are compared with a variety of parton-shower models. Herwig and Pythia 8 based models describe the data well for the higher jT region, while they underestimate the low…

related to the perturbative component of the fragmentation processthe measured trends are successfully described by all models except for Herwig. For the wide componentHerwig and PYTHIA 8 based models slightly underestimate the data for the higher jet transverse momentum region. These measurements set constraints on models of jet fragmentation and hadronisation.Nuclear and High Energy Physicswhile that of the inverse gamma function increases with increasing jet transverse momentum. For the narrow componentHeavy Ion Experimentsand with a Gaussian for lower jT values (called the “narrow component”)hiukkasfysiikkawhile they underestimate the lower jT region. The jT distributions are further characterised by fitting them with a function composed of an inverse gamma function for higher jT values (called the “wide component”)predominantly connected to the hadronisation process. The width of the Gaussian has only a weak dependence on jet transverse momentumJet fragmentation transverse momentum (jT) distributions are measured in proton-proton (pp) and proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. cis-Regulation and chromatin dynamics of the hbox12 gene during the embryogenesis of Paracentrotus lividus.

2014

The GRN specifying the dorsal-ventral (D-V) axis of the sea urchin embryo is currently under investigation. An early input for D-V polarity is given by a redox gradient probably generated by an asymmetrical distribution of maternal mitochondria (1). Only on the future ventral side, the oxidizing environment induces the expression of the nodal gene, an essential regulator of D-V polarization (2). By contrast, on the future dorsal side, a reducing environment activates the hypoxia inducible factor (HIF-1α) (3). The hbox12 transcription repressor is an early marker of the dorsal side of the embryo, in which it negatively regulates the expression of nodal (4, 5). Interestingly, by in silico ana…

Loneliness in adult people: its relationships with stress, health and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis functioning

2022

Skeleton-Based Multiview Reconstruction

2016

International audience; The advantage of skeleton-based 3D reconstruction is to completely generate a single 3D object from well chosen views. Having numerous views is necessary for a reliable reconstruction but projections of skeletons lead to different topologies. We reconstruct 3D objects with curved medial axis (whose topology is a tree) from the perspective skeletons on an arbitrary number of calibrated acquisitions. The main contribution is to estimate the 3D skeleton, from multiple images: its topology is chosen as the closest to those of the perspective skeletons on the set of images, which means that the number of topology changes to map the 3D skeleton topology to topologies on im…

Mogućnosti i granice montaže modela čeljusti orijentiranih prema šarnirskoj osi

1988
