Bacterial production (BP) in lakes has generally only been measured in the pelagic zone without accounting for littoral BP, and studies of BP at the whole-lake scale are very scarce. In the dystrophic humic lakes, which are common throughout the boreal region, low light penetration through water has been assumed to seriously limit available habitats for littoral organisms. Essential oil variability in a collection of Ocimum basilicum L. (basil) cultivars.

Ocimum basilicum L. (Lamiaceae) is an aromatic plant of great tradition in the Mediterranean area. Its economic importance is growing up determining an expansion of cultivation. This paper evaluated the morphological traits, the chemical profiles, and antibacterial activity of 21 cultivars of basil belonging to Ê»Genoveseʼ, Ê»Napoletanoʼ, and Ê»Purple basilʼ types. The cultivars were characterized by different growth rate and morphological traits. The chemical composition of the oils analyzed by GC and GC/MS analysis, supported by the PCA analysis, underlined the strong influence of chemotype. Abstract In this study, changes of bioactive compounds (crude protein (CP), crude fat (CF), dietary fiber (DF), fatty acids (FAs), free amino acids (FAAs), phenolic compounds (PCs), biogenic amines (BAs), lignans, and alkylresorcinols) in barley industry by‐products (BB) during submerged and solid state fermentation (SSF) with Pediococcus acidilactici were analyzed. It was established that both fermentation conditions reduce the CP and CF content in BB (by 25.8% and 35.9%, respectively) and increase DF content (on average by 25.0%). Identification and biological traits of a planthopper from the genus Pentastiridius (Hemiptera: Cixiidae) adapted to an annual cropping rotation

International audience; Cixiid planthoppers have been shown to vector phloem-limited prokaryotes associated with plant diseases world-wide. In eastern France, an emerging disease of sugar beet called syndrome basses richesses has been associated with phloem-restricted bacteria transmitted by a cixiid planthopper within the genus Pentastiridius. Early investigation suggested the species being Pentastiridius beieri. Chironomid incorporation of methane-derived carbon in plankton- and macrophyte-dominated habitats in a large shallow lake

1. While 13 C-depleted carbon derived from biogenic methane can substantially contribute to the benthic secondary production in deep stratified lakes, its role in shallow lakes is less clear.
