Biogenic iron-silver nanoparticles inhibit bacterial biofilm formation due to Ag+ release as determined by a novel phycoerythrin-based assay

2020

Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) can be considered as a cost-effective alternative to antibiotics. In the presence of Fe(III)-citrate and Ag+, Klebsiella oxytoca DSM 29614 produces biogenic Ag-NPs embedded in its peculiar exopolysaccharide (EPS). K. oxytoca DSM 29614 was cultivated in a defined growth medium–containing citrate (as sole carbon source) and supplemented with Ag+ and either low or high Fe(III) concentration. As inferred from elemental analysis, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and dynamic light scattering, Ag-EPS NPs were produced in both conditions and contained also Fe. The production yield of high-Fe/Ag-EPS NPs was 12 times …

Development of functionalizable azaBODIPYs for the conception of theranostic agents and bimodal probes for imaging uses

2020

The in vivo use of optical imaging is still limited by the lack of near infrared emitting probes. This thesis work focuses on the optimization and valorization of a water-soluble fluorescent platform whose optical properties enable an in vivo use. Two distinct applications were investigated for this WazaBY (Water-soluble azaBODIPY) platform: use as a PET (or SPECT) / optical bimodal probe, and as a theranostic agent. Concerning the first project, we were able to develop a targetted SPECT/optical bimodal probe, which was radiometallated with indium 111. Using xenografted murine models, we were able to show a clear accumulation of the probe in the tumor 24 hours after injection. Moreover, the…

Evidence of basaltic magma intrusions in a trachytic magma chamber at Pantelleria (Italy)

2012

In the last 50 ka basalts have erupted outside the margin of the young caldera on the island of Pantelleria. The inner portion of the caldera has instead been filled by trachyte lavas, pantellerite lavas and pumice fall deposits. This paper focuses on a low-volume benmoreite lava topping the trachyte lava pile in the middle of the young caldera. The mineral chemistry, including trace elements in clinopyroxene (LA-ICP-MS), suggests that benmoreite is a hybrid product resulting from mixing between a trachytic magma and a basaltic end member even more primitive than those erupted during the past 50 ka. The principal inference is that basaltic magmas intruded the trachytic magma chamber below t…

Morphological variability in and distributional data on phaleria bimaculata populations from islands of the central mediterranean area

2011

This study aimed to collect new taxonomic and distribution data on Phaleria bimaculata (L.) (Coleoptera Tenebrionidae) from Sicily (southern Italy), the circum-Sicilian islands and the Maltese archipelago. Particular attention was paid to the diagnostic morphological features observed in the populations sampled, focusing on the subspecies Phaleria bimaculata marcuzzii Aliquò. P. bimaculata individuals were collected from 20 different locations, of which 2 were located in the Sicilian mainland, 9 in circum-Sicilian islands and 9 in the Maltese Islands. In addition, four Phaleria acuminata Kuster populations were also recorded along southern Sicilian shores. The two Phaleria species were neve…

SAHA/TRAIL combination induces detachment and anoikis of MDA-MB231 and MCF-7 breast cancer cells

2012

Abstract SAHA, an inhibitor of histone deacetylase activity, has been shown to sensitize tumor cells to apoptosis induced by TRAIL, a member of TNF-family. In this paper we investigated the effect of SAHA/TRAIL combination in two breast cancer cell lines, the ERα−positive MCF-7 and the ERα−negative MDA-MB231. Treatment of MDA-MB231 and MCF-7 cells with SAHA in combination with TRAIL caused detachment of cells followed by anoikis, a form of apoptosis which occurs after cell detachment, while treatment with SAHA or TRAIL alone did not produce these effects. The effects were more evident in MDA-MB231 cells, which were chosen for ascertaining the mechanism of SAHA/TRAIL action. Our results show…

The new boundaries of digitization: from bim to parametric modelling

2022

The theme of digitization and documentation, which inevitably affects the fields of surveying and designing architecture and urban areas, is constantly innovated by the new digital technologies and new multimedia communication systems that allow us to acquire, analyze and disseminate the value of our historical heritage. Research in this field pushes us to overcome the limits imposed by tested technologies in order to extend the field of application in the surveying and representation of the increasingly complex challenges imposed by the needs of conservation and maintenance. This volume, which follows on from the three previous conferences of the “Digital & Documentation” cycle that to…

STUDIO DI GIUNZIONI METALLO-COMPOSITO SOTTOPOSTE A CARICHI STATICI E DI FATICA

2009

New site-specific bioconjugation strategies and their application to the development of molecular imaging agents for cancer diagnostic

2018

The preparation of targeted imaging agents suitable for cancer diagnostic involves the coupling of an imaging probe to a vector, generally a protein, able to specifically target cancerous tissues. Unfortunately, this bioconjugation step is often problematic. Indeed, proteins present a large variety of reactive functions that can potentially interfere with the coupling reaction. The purpose of this work is the design of innovative selective bioconjugation strategies that can facilitate the synthesis of molecular imaging agents. Our research led to the development of a simple and efficient approach allowing the modification of a protein with a fluorophore by using a site-specific bioconjugatio…
