Effects of different etching strategies on the microtensile repair bond strength of beautifil II giomer material
2018
Background Considering the differences in the filler particles between giomer and conventional composite resins and the importance of these fillers in the repair bond strength, the aim was to evaluate the effects of different etching strategies with phosphoric acid (PA) and hydrofluoric acid (HF) on the microtensile repair bond strength (µTRBS) of giomer. Material and Methods Ten giomer blocks were randomly assigned into 10: 1) control; 2) 37%PA-20s; 3) 3%HF-20s; 4) 3%HF-120s; 5) 9.6%HF-20s; 6) 9.6%HF-120s; 7) 37%PA-20s + 3%HF-120s; 8) 37%PA-20s + 9.6%HF-120s; 9) 3%HF-120s + 37%PA-20s; 10) 9.6%HF-120s + 37%PA-20s. In all groups, the One-Step Plus bonding system was applied and the new giome…
Detecting Ankle Instability With an Instrumented Ankle Arthrometer: An Experimental Study.
2019
A new instrumented device was developed to quantify ankle joint stability during an anterior talar drawer test. The aim of the present study was to validate this device comparing bone kinematics with arthrometer measurement outcomes. An anterior talar drawer test was performed with 14 cadaver legs using a custom instrumented ankle arthrometer. Using clusters of bone-pin markers, the relative three-dimensional movement of calcaneus, talus, and fibula was simultaneously measured. Anterior drawer test was applied on the intact foot and after sequentially sectioning the anterior talofibular ligament, the calcaneofibular ligament, and the posterior talofibular ligament. Cutting the anterior talo…

Hepassocin as a treatment for fulminant hepatic failure: will it translate from rats to human?
2010
Acute liver failure (ALF) is defined as the abrupt loss of hepatic cellular function in a patient without pre-existing liver disease, with the subsequent development of coagulopathy, jaundice and encephalopathy. It remains one of the most challenging medical emergencies, due to the multiorgan nature of the disease, the rapid evolution of the clinical condition and the need for multidisciplinary supportive interventions in order to assess the necessity for liver transplantation (LT) correctly.1 Despite different causes of ALF, the mode of cell death typically follows one of two patterns: necrosis or apoptosis; apoptosis is manifest by nuclear and cytoplasmic shrinkage without disturbance of …

Color stability of CAD/CAM Zirconia ceramics following exposure to acidic and staining drinks.
2017
Background The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the color stability of CAD/CAM Zirconia ceramics following exposure to acidic drink (Coca Cola) and after exposure to staining solution (coffee). Material and Methods All the samples were immersed in different staining solutions over a 28-day test period. A colorimetric evaluation according to the CIE L*a*b* system was performed by a blind trained operator at 7, 14, 21, 28 days of the staining process. Shapiro Wilk test and Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA were applied to assess significant differences among restorative materials. Paired t-test was applied to test which CIE L*a*b* parameters significantly changed after immersion in staining solu…
Influence of core color on final shade reproduction of zirconia crown in single central incisor situation ? An in vivo study
2020
Background A lot of shaded zirconia blocks are being introduced into the market. Their effect on the final shade of the restoration is yet uncertain. Material and methods Twenty-four zirconia crowns were fabricated for 8 patients who needed to restore a single maxillary central incisor, and divided into 3 groups according to the color and type of the zirconia (Zr) used (white Zr core, colored Zr core, and monolithic high translucency (ht) Zr crowns). Using Easyshade spectrophotometer, delta E color difference was calculated between fabricated crown and adjacent tooth. The ΔEs obtained were assessed based on 1.6 ΔE which represented the color difference that could not be detected by the huma…
Influence of substrate design for in vitro mechanical testing
2019
Background: The goal of this study was to evaluate the influence of dental substrate simulator material, and the presence of root and periodontal ligament on the stress distribution in an adhesively-cemented monolithic crown.Material and methods: Five (5) 3D models according to the substrate simulator material and shape were modeled with CAD software for conducting non-linear finite element analysis (FEA): Tooth with and without periodontal ligament - subgroup "pl" (groups Tooth+pl and Tooth-pl), machined tooth in epoxy-resin with and without pulp chamber - subgroup "pc" (ER+pc and ER-pc) and simplified epoxy-resin substrate without pulp chamber and roots (SiER). Next, adhesively-cemented m…
Dental-gingival remodeling with BOPT no-prep veneers
2017
Recent years have seen increasing demand for treatments aimed at improving dental esthetics. In this context, both patients and dentists prefer to preserve dental structures as far as possible; thanks to technological advances, especially in adhesive dentistry, new materials and minimally invasive techniques such as “no-prep” (no preparation) veneers have made this possible. Nevertheless, no-prep veneers have specific indications and suffer certain disadvantages. Objectives: This clinical case describes the rehabilitation of the upper anterior region by means of no-prep veneers, with BOPT (Biologically Oriented Preparation Technique) cervical margins. The patient had requested an aesthetic …
Immediate prosthesis over implants retained using abutments with flexible screws: A preliminary study
2017
Background Immediate loading protocols for the rehabilitation of edentulous or partially edentulous patients have become very popular, due to the conveniences they afford in comparison with conventional loading techniques. Material and Methods A preliminary study was carried out with 8 patients subjected to dental implant treatment with an immediate loading protocol involving a novel system of abutments with flexible screws. Implant survival was analyzed, together with marginal bone loss and patient and dentist satisfaction. Results A total of 35 implants were subjected to immediate loading using the abutments with flexible screws. The mean patient and dentist satisfaction score was 9.1 and…
