Ubertino da Corleone

Originario di Corleone, Ubertino era un francescano minore con una solida preparazione, abituato a interloquire con papi e re. La sua abilità oratoria fu apprezzata da Giovanni Boccaccio, che l’incontrò a Napoli. Studiò teologia a Londra, Oxford, Parigi, fu lettore a Pisa e Padova. Tornato in Sicilia, divenne cappellano regio e nel 1372 partecipò ai negoziati di pace tra Federico IV, re di Sicilia, e Giovanna I, regina di Napoli. Ad Avignone, incontrò Gregorio XI, che lo nominò vescovo di Corico, nel Regno di Cilicia. «Hinc Tomyris Crassum male multat»: nota a Naldo Naldi, carm. var. VI 121-138

In questa nota viene proposta l’analisi di un breve episodio che si legge nel carme ‹De virtute› (carm. var. 6, 121-138) del poeta fiorentino Naldo Naldi (1439-1513), relativo alla figura di Marco Licinio Crasso, fin dall’antichità e, poi, nel Medioevo e nell’Umanesimo, tipico exemplum di insaziabile avidità e di avarizia punita. This note proposes the analysis of a short episode that can be read in the poem ‹De virtute› (carm. var. 6, 121-138) of the Florentine poet Naldo Naldi (1439-1513), relating to the figure of Marco Licinio Crasso, since Antiquity and then, in the Middle Ages and Humanism, a typical exemplum of insatiable greed and punished avarice.

The «Elegia di madonna Fiammetta» has an evident impact of the story of Leandre and Hero, especially in the moments in which the lady suffers while waiting for her lover, who never comes. Fiammetta makes obvious this parallelism on several occasions, and manages to invent an end for the story loaded of pathos. Joan Roís de Corella realises about this relationship between both two works and makes the inverse path: he uses the tone and some narrative elements of the Elegia for writing his Leander and Hero. It is demonstrated that the so contreversial end of Corella’s story is not original of the Valencian, but it also depends on Boccaccio’s text
