Bacteria and Complement — A Historical Review

1985

In the second half of the nineteenth century, shortly after it became clear from the work of Louis Pasteur (1822–1895) and Robert Koch (1843–1910) that microorganisms cause infectious diseases, extensive studies were untertaken to elucidate the mechanisms of protection from and resistance to infections. This early history of the investigation of immunity is characterized by the dispute between two opposing schools, the protagonists of the “cellular” and the “humoral” theories. Eli Metchnikoff (1845–1919) was the first to recognize the general significance of the phenomenon of phagocytosis in animal tissues. In 1883, he published his first papers in the presentation of the theory of phagocyt…

Spoilage of oat bran by sporogenic microorganisms revived from soil buried 4000 years ago in Iranian archaeological site

2015

Abstract The Bronze Age archaeological site of Shahr-i Sokhta (30° 39′ N; 61° 24’ E), located today in southeastern Iran, Sistan region, is a special archaeological deposit in which the exceptional preservation of human, plant and animal remains, due to the dry climate of the region, can provide detailed information on one of the first complex proto-urban societies. In recent years, there has been growing interest in changes in local climate and environment as major reasons why the settlement was abandoned about 4000 years ago. Food shortage has been regarded as a direct effect of these changes. No attention has been paid to the potential health hazards associated with ancient urban/domesti…

A prospective observational study on oral administration of Ellagic Acid and Annona Muricata in patients affected by non-muscle invasive bladder canc…

2021

Introduction: BCG and MMC shortage and Covid-19 pandemic, more recently, limit accessibility to maintenance regimen in intravesical prophylaxis against recurrence of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Ellagic acid (EA) and Annona muricata (AM) exert antitumor activity against different human tumours. An observational prospective study on the prophylactic effect of oral administration of EA+AM in patients avoiding maintenance regimen is presented. Materials and methods: Patients affected by NMIBC and not undergoing maintenance after a 6-week course of intravesical prophylaxis with MMC or BCG were entered. Tis and very high-risk tumours were excluded. After informed consent, the pati…

IMPIEGO DEL RADIONUCLIDE 137CS PER LA STIMA DEI PROCESSI EROSIVI IN UN BACINO FORESTATO

2008

"In vitro" antagonism of a grapevine endophytic Bacillus subtilis strain towards "esca" fungi.

2008

Preliminary investigations on grapevines (CV Catarratto) with symptoms of “esca” permitted to isolate only bacterial colonies, from black punctuations belonging to the genus Bacillus. Particularly, an isolate was Gram-positive with spore forming and, on the basis of the partial 16S rRNA sequence comparison, it showed a similarity of 99% with Bacillus subtilis subsp. subtilis. There are numerous reports on the antagonistic activity of the species towards several phytopathogenic microorganisms. For this reason the possible bacterial control against the “esca” fungi (Phaeoacre- monium aleophilum, PAL; Phaemoniella clamidospora, PCH; Fomitiporia mediterranea, FOMED), was studied. The antagonist…

Antibiotic resistance among Shigella serogroups isolated in Tehran, Iran (2002-2004)

2009

Shigellosis, one of the most common bacterial diarrhoeal diseases, is endemic throughout the world. It is one of the major causes of morbidity in children with diarrhoea in Iran [1-4]. Antibiotic therapy is useful and effective for shigellosis. Treatment is critical for persons with severe disease, particularly children and immunosuppressed patients. Use of an appropriate antibiotic therapy can shorten the duration of symptoms, significantly reduce the risk of transmission, and also prevent potentially lethal complications [5-7]. However, high frequencies of resistance in
