Effects of sauna bath on heart failure : A systematic review and meta-analysis
2018
Background: Sauna bath has potential as a lifestyle treatment modality for heart failure (HF). It is important to analyze the current evidence to help suggest paths of future study and potential for clinical application. Hypothesis: Sauna bath has a positive effect on HF patients. Methods: PubMed, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL databases were searched to identify randomized and nonrandomized controlled studies to compare effects of sauna bath with no sauna bath. Studies were searched for both infrared sauna bath and Finnish sauna bath. The strength of evidence was rated using a modified GRADE approach. Out of 1444 studies, nine met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. Seve…
Integration of Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition and Wet Chemical Techniques to Obtain Highly Ordered Porous ZnO Nanoplatforms
2011
Large-area, highly ordered ZnO micropores-arrays consisting of ZnO nanotubes delimited by ZnO nanorods have been successfully fabricated and tested for protein sensing applications. ZnO seed layers have been deposited by Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition and readily patterned by Colloidal Lithography to attain ZnO nanorods growth at selective sites by Chemical Bath Deposition. The used synthetic approach has been proven effective for the easy assembly of ZnO nanoplatforms into high-density arrays. Both patterned and unpatterned ZnO nanorods have been morphologically and compositionally characterised and, thus, tested for model studies of protein mobility at the interface. The pattern…
Limits and Criticalities of Predictions and Forecasting in Complex Social and Economic Scenarios: A Cybernetics Key
2014
Predictions play a key role in assuring the status of “rationality” in decisions. Nevertheless, in the field of social sciences and economics, predictions fail to correctly depict the oncoming scenarios. Why is it so difficult to achieve quantitative prediction of social and economic systems? Can science provide reliable predictions of social and economic paths that can be used to implement effective interventions? As in the notorious “El Farol bar problem” depicted by Brian Arthur (Am Econ Rev 84:406–411, 1994), the validity of predictive models is more a social issue than a matter of good mathematics. Predictability in social systems is due to limited knowledge of society and human behavi…
Domestic and International Tourism in Sicilian Bathing Resorts: Evidences from Official and Ad-hoc Survey Data
2010
Similarly to other social phenomena, tourism demand has recently been affected by social complexity: travellers select destinations on the basis of situational and mixed preference criteria, of which common features are however identifiable. In order to plan tourism policies, decision makers are wondering how the new trends of international tourism materialize at the local level. That’s why in Sicily the debate is still open on the reasons why tourism has not developed as much as expected. In this paper we shall discuss such arguments using both official statistics and data from the sample researches made in 2004 and 2005 in two well-known Sicilian bathing resorts, the Aeolian Islands and C…
New insight about the mural painting branches of Roman baths in Reggio Calabria
2023
The Roman baths in Reggio Calabria (Italy) provides many information regarding both engineering and technology for this type of buildings. A small treasure of three survived mural paintings enclose information about the artistic style and the ancient luxury of the baths. In order to get light on the executive technique and conservation state we performed the investigation of these paintings by following a non invasive approach composed of multispectral imaging and spectroscopic analysis. By so doing we determined the pigment palette and the distribution of some pigments allowing us to make some hypothesis about the executive technique and provide a basis for a future virtual restoration of …
Is Sauna Bathing Protective of Sudden Cardiac Death? A Review of the Evidence
2019
Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a global public health burden accounting for 15–20% of all deaths. Though established atherosclerotic risk factors explain a large proportion of the risk of SCD, these factors are often absent in a large proportion of SCD victims and the pathogenesis of SCD is still not fully established. It therefore appears that additional factors may be involved. Sauna bathing is a traditional Finnish activity that is mainly used for the purposes of relaxation and pleasure. Beyond its use for these purposes, sauna bathing has been linked with several health benefits. Emerging evidence suggests that sauna bathing is associated with reduced risk of adverse cardiovascular (CV) …
Assessing Seagrass Restoration Actions through a Micro-Bathymetry Survey Approach (Italy, Mediterranean Sea)
2022
Underwater photogrammetry provides a means of generating high-resolution products such as dense point clouds, 3D models, and orthomosaics with centimetric scale resolutions. Underwater photogrammetric models can be used to monitor the growth and expansion of benthic communities, including the assessment of the conservation status of seagrass beds and their change over time (time lapse micro-bathymetry) with OBIA classifications (Object-Based Image Analysis). However, one of the most complex aspects of underwater photogrammetry is the accuracy of the 3D models for both the horizontal and vertical components used to estimate the surfaces and volumes of biomass. In this study, a photogrammetry…
Abstract: The present article deals with the perception of «the oriental», a relevant topic nowadays, especially after the events of 11 September 2001, whe…
SIMULATING SPIN MODELS ON GPU: A TOUR
2012
The use of graphics processing units (GPUs) in scientific computing has gathered considerable momentum in the past five years. While GPUs in general promise high performance and excellent performance per Watt ratios, not every class of problems is equally well suitable for exploiting the massively parallel architecture they provide. Lattice spin models appear to be prototypic examples of problems suitable for this architecture, at least as long as local update algorithms are employed. In this review, I summarize our recent experience with the simulation of a wide range of spin models on GPU employing an equally wide range of update algorithms, ranging from Metropolis and heat bath updates,…
