Convenience Behavior and Being Overweight in Adults: Development and Validation of the Convenience Behavior Questionnaire
2019
The etiology of overweight and obesity is a mixture of genetic determinants, environmental factors, and health behaviors. Especially intra- and interpersonal inactive behaviors, here termed convenience, seems to play an important role. The objective was to develop and validate the Convenience Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ) to assess convenience-related items and their association with overweight and obesity in a large population. A sample of 1233 subjects aged 18–82 years from six population groups took part in a self-administered questionnaire. Test-retest reliability was estimated and the independent association between convenience-related items and overweight and obesity was investigated. …

Does better education mitigate risky health behavior? A mendelian randomization study.
2022
Education and risky health behaviors are strongly negatively correlated. Education may affect health behaviors by enabling healthier choices through higher disposable income, increasing information about the harmful effects of risky health behaviors, or altering time preferences. Alternatively, the observed negative correlation may stem from reverse causality or unobserved confounders. Based on the data from the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study linked to register-based information on educational attainment and family background, this paper identifies the causal effect of education on risky health behaviors. To examine causal effects, we used a genetic score as an instrument for year…
Understanding the Effects of Crosslinking and Reinforcement Agents on the Performance and Durability of Biopolymer Films for Cultural Heritage Protec…
2021
In the last two decades, the naturally occurring polysaccharides, such as chitosan and pectin, have gained great attention having potential applications in different sectors, from biomedical to new generation packaging. Currently, the chitosan and pectic have been proposed as suitable materials also for the formulation of films and coatings for cultural heritage protection, as well as packaging films. Therefore, the formulation of biopolymer films, considering only naturally occurring polymers and additives, is a current challenging trend. This work reports on the formulation of chitosan (CS), pectin (PC), and chitosan:pectin (CS:PC) films, also containing natural crosslinking and reinforce…
Threat Appraisal, Resilience, and Health Behaviors in Recovered COVID-19 Patients: The Serial Mediation of Coping and Meaning-Making
2023
Research indicates that both cognitive appraisal and personal resources can noticeably influence health behaviors, as individuals modify their health convictions and practices on the basis of threat appraisal, personality, and meaning. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether coping strategies and meaning-making can serially mediate the relationship of threat appraisal and resilience with health behaviors in recovered COVID-19 patients. Self-report measures of threat appraisal, resilience, coping, meaning-making, and health behaviors were completed by 266 participants (aged 17 to 78, 51.5% female) who had recovered from COVID-19. The serial mediation analysis showed that the …
Does organized sport participation during youth predict healthy habits in adulthood? : A 28-year longitudinal study
2018
Health behaviors in youth can predict the same behaviors later in life, but the role of sport participation in predicting healthy lifestyle habits is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between participation in organized youth sport and adult healthy lifestyle habits. Data from the longitudinal Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study (YFS) with a 28‐year follow‐up were used. The participation in sport‐club training sessions was self‐reported by 9‐18‐year‐olds in 1983 and 1986 (n = 1285). During 2011, participants (aged 37‐43‐year old) reported their smoking status, alcohol consumption, fruit and vegetable consumption, and physical activity. Odd ratios (OR) were calcula…
Assessment of health behaviors of patients with heart failure treated in a cardiology department
2021
Background Following pharmacological recommendations and leading a healthy lifestyle are imperative to improve the health and quality of life of patients with heart failure (HF). Material and methods This cross-sectional, observational study examined 100 patients with HF who were treated in the cardiology department. The average age of the respondents was 70±14 years (mean±SD), and the majority were men (65%). The Health Behavior Inventory Questionnaire and the authors’ questionnaire were used. Results The respondents collectively reported an average level of health behaviors. There was a negative correlation between age and proper eating habits (rho=-0.248; p=0.013) and a positive mental a…
DIETING AND HEALTH BEHAVIORS IN RELATION TO HEALTH AND ANXIETY IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION STUDENTS AND THEIR RELATIVES
2020
Abstract Healthy appearance is often mistakenly associated with a slim figure and being on a diet is wrongly seen as an indication of taking care of health and the quality of the food consumed. Literature shows that it may not always be the case, due to the anxiety caused by restrictions in the area of eating. Dieting can have multiple negative consequences, anxiety and depression being only two of them. Restricting food intake can also result in eating disorders and health issues as restricting calories in one’s diet can lead to nutritional deficiencies. This paper studies the relationships between dieting and anxiety, dieting and health, dieting and health behaviors, and between heal…
WATCHING PEOPLE: ALGORITHMS TO STUDY HUMAN MOTION AND ACTIVITIES
2020
Nowadays human motion analysis is one of the most active research topics in Computer Vision and it is receiving an increasing attention from both the industrial and scientific communities. The growing interest in human motion analysis is motivated by the increasing number of promising applications, ranging from surveillance, human–computer interaction, virtual reality to healthcare, sports, computer games and video conferencing, just to name a few. The aim of this thesis is to give an overview of the various tasks involved in visual motion analysis of the human body and to present the issues and possible solutions related to it. In this thesis, visual motion analysis is categorized into thr…
Mother's and daughter's : interplay of physical activity with personal, behavioral, and environmental factors
2017
The purpose of this study was to explore the family dynamics in order to further understand and discover through interviews a parent and their children's behaviors in the topic area of physical activity choices. A narrative case study approach was taken to look into each family's experiences in order to better understand their motivations behind physical activity and to make conclusions of the social, environmental, and behavioral dynamics. Semi-structured interviews were completed with the parent and then with the child individually for a total of three families and four children. Family A is from South Korea living in Finland, family B is from Finland and living in Finland, family C is or…
