Anti-inflammatory activity in selected Antarctic benthic organisms

Antarctic benthos was prospected in search for anti-inflammatory activity in polar benthic invertebrates, in two different geographical areas: deep-bottoms of the Eastern Weddell Sea and shallow-waters of the South Shetland Islands. A total of 36 benthic algae and invertebrate species were selected to perform solubility tests in order to obtain extracts that were soluble at an innocuous ethanol concentration (0.2%) for cell culture, and further test them for anti-inflammatory activity. From these, ethanol extracts of ten species from five different phyla resulted suitable to be studied in cell macrophage cultures (RAW 264.7). Se ha analizado el sentido de enrollamiento de siete especies de foraminíferos bentónicos procedentes del marjal de Torreblanca localizado al norte de la Comunidad Valenciana, Este de España. Si bien en ninguna especie se ha observado un marcado predominio en el sentido de enrollamiento, dos de ellas muestran una preferencia leve pero estadísticamente significativa: Ammonia beccarii tepida es predominantemente dextrógira y Metarotaliella simplex? preferentemente levógira. An Information Systems Design Product Theory for Software Project Estimation and Measurement Systems

There is relatively little research on software Project Estimation and Measurement Systems (PEMS). Commercial PEMS vary in functionality and effectiveness. Their intended users thus do not know what to expect from PEMS and how to evaluate them. This paper creates an information system design product theory for the class of PEMS that prescribes the meta-requirements, the meta-design, and applicable theories for all products within the class. Meta-requirements and the meta-design are derived from the project estimation and measurement literature, experiences obtained during more than ten years of empirical work in Finnish Software Measurement Association, and a commercially available PEMS.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) in Volcano island (Aeolian archipelago) mud utilized for therapeutic purpose

This paper examines the possible presence, distribution, nature and sources of 18 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) as constituents of the mud pools collected in Vulcano Aeolian Island. PAH are important from environmental and toxicological point of view. Analysis was performed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in selected ion monitoring (SIM). The total concentration of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons ranged from 112 to 154 μ g/Kg of dry matrix. The volcanic mud, used for therapeutic purposes, are moderately contaminated.
