Changes in colour discrimination during the menstrual cycle.

A group of normal women of reproductive age were recruited to investigate colour discrimination during the various phases of the menstrual cycle. Colour vision was tested with the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue arrangement test, and the test was administered at 3 time points: the beginning of the cycle, ovulation, and the end of the cycle. We found that colour discrimination was better at ovulation than at the other 2 time points. It is possible that psychological as well as hormonal factors could contribute to improved colour vision performance at ovulation.
Synthesis and biological activities of a new class of heat shock protein 90 inhibitors, designed by energy-based pharmacophore virtual screening

The design through energy-based pharmacophore virtual screening has led to aminocyanopyridine derivatives as efficacious new inhibitors of Hsp90. The synthesized compounds showed a good affinity for the Hsp90 ATP binding site in the competitive binding assay. Moreover, they showed an excellent antiproliferative activity against a large number of human tumor cell lines. Further biological studies on the derivative with the higher EC50 confirmed its specific influence on the cellular pathways involving Hsp90.

The genus Pistacia (Anacardiaceae family) is represented by several species, of which only P. vera L. produces edible seeds (pistachio). Despite the different flavor and taste, a correct identification of pistachio varieties based on the sole phenotypic character is sometimes hard to achieve. The bioavailability of phenolic compounds from five cultivars of frozen sweet cherries was assessed by a digestion process involving pepsin-HCl digestion (to simulate gastric digestion) and pancreatin digestion with bile salts (to simulate small intestine conditions) and dialyzed to assess serum- and colon-available fractions. After pepsin digestion, the % recovery of total phenolics, relative to the original starting material, increased, whereas the % anthocyanins did not change. Abstract This study evaluated the polyphenol profile and the antioxidative properties of Plinia trunciflora (O. Berg) Kausel fruits. Folin-Ciocalteau and pH-jumping methods indicated that these berries are a major source of antioxidant polyphenols (1201.05 mg GAE/100 g FW), particularly anthocyanins. HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS analysis identified cyanidine glycosides as the main components. Flavon-3-ols and hydrolysable-tannins were also found. Abstract Portulaca oleracea is an annual succulent herb (purslane) with high antioxidant properties and high content of essential ω-3 and ω-6 fatty acids, ascorbic acid, α-tocopherol and β-carotene. In the present study, sensorial and chemical analyses of uncooked and cooked durum wheat pasta fortified with purslane from three different Sicilian areas and at three different concentrations (5, 10 and 15%) were estimated.
