Effect of Conjugated Linoleic Acid on Testosterone Levels In Vitro and In Vivo After an Acute Bout of Resistance Exercise

The purposes of the present study were to investigate the effect of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) supplementation on testosterone levels in vitro on a cell line derived from Leydig cells (R2C) and in vivo in the blood of physically active subjects before and after a resistance exercise bout. In vitro R2C cells were treated with different CLA concentrations (0-30 μM) for 24 and 48 hours. After treatment, supernatant media were tested to determine testosterone secretion. The CLA increased the testosterone secretion only after 48 hours. Obesity is considered a primary risk factor for cardiovascular disease and related mortality. The current study aimed to investigate the efficacy of minimal invasive gastric banding (GB) surgery for reducing caloric intake in morbid obesity, and to analyze the effects of weight loss on body composition and metabolic and psychosocial outcomes. Twenty-six adult severely obese patients (mean body mass index [BMI], 48.1 kg/m(2); range, 42 to 56) underwent adjustable silicone laparoscopic GB. Methods: Data were obtained from 1033 Finnish adults from the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study in 2007 and 2011. Cohort study participants wore an Omron Walking Style One (HJ-152R-E) pedometer for five days and were grouped into those who increased, maintained and decreased their steps between 2007 and 2011. We report a technique for implanting intraocular lenses (IOLs) in the ciliary sulcus in eyes without capsule support. The IOL design allows it to be implanted without fixation sutures. The lens was implanted in 3 aphakic eyes without capsule support.

Investigation into isoprenaline resistance in patients with obstructive lung disease

12 patients with chronic obstructive lung disease have been studied in an investigation regarding the causes of resistance to isoprenaline. The effects of repeated intravenous doses of 10 µg isoprenaline were assessed by cross over comparison before and after infusions of isoprenaline and a placebo; the infusions lasted for 35 to 40 min and the amount of isoprenaline infused was 0.5 µg/min. Total resistance, thoracic gas volume (whole-body plethysmography) and heart rate (ECG) were measured. No decrease in bronchospasmolytic or positive chronotopic effects on single isoprenaline injections could be demonstrated after prolonged infusions of isoprenaline.
