Un letterato e mestierante del libro tra Austria e Sicilia: Juan Silvestre Salva
2021
The dynamics of printed text production and circulation during the second half of 17th century are shown through an individual case study. Juan Silvestre Salva was a Spanish literate man active in Vienna (translator, occasional poet) before migrating to Sicily as a book professional (proof corrector, publisher and printer, and eventually librarian). His most important venture was perhaps the issue of some texts by Archimedes, that he managed to accomplish in Palermo, from the basis of a former edition that another printer had started in Messina, and then interrupted at the time of the city rebellion against the Spanish crown.
Il primo Ricettario
2022
Publication of the first volume of Giovanni Meli's medical recipe book kept at the Municipal Library of Palermo. Their author (1740-1815) was a multifaceted intellectual: a famous poet, but also an eclectic philosopher, doctor and first professor of Chemistry at the University of Palermo.
La sfida anarchica nel Rojava
2019
In this book, the editors collect a series of contributions about the revolution in Rojava (Kurdistan), in the name of democratic confederalism inspired by the anarchist ideals of libertarian municipalism by Murray Bookchin

Cysterska i jezuicka wersja śląskich Litanii o św. Barbarze
2020
St Barbara is a patroness saint deeply ingrained in the culture of Upper Silesia. It was chiefly the 19th century that was deciding in this respect, since the process of linking the martyr-woman to the miners’ occupational group was concluded then. The miners’ community played a significant role in the socioeconomic and identityrelated character of the region. Consequently, the cult of St Barbara started to be grafted onto this land towards the end of the 17th century, mainly as a result of founding religious fraternities under the Saint’s vocation by monastic orders already based here. The process of accretion of fraternities aiming at religiousness and piety was connected with the plan of…
The adaptive nature of liquidity taking in limit order books
2014
In financial markets, the order flow, defined as the process assuming value one for buy market orders and minus one for sell market orders, displays a very slowly decaying autocorrelation function. Since orders impact prices, reconciling the persistence of the order flow with market efficiency is a subtle issue. A possible solution is provided by asymmetric liquidity, which states that the impact of a buy or sell order is inversely related to the probability of its occurrence. We empirically find that when the order flow predictability increases in one direction, the liquidity in the opposite side decreases, but the probability that a trade moves the price decreases significantly. While the…
Investigation of Simulated Trading — A multi agent based trading system for optimization purposes
2010
Abstract Some years ago, Bachem, Hochstattler, and Malich proposed a heuristic algorithm called Simulated Trading for the optimization of vehicle routing problems. Computational agents place buy-orders and sell-orders for customers to be handled at a virtual financial market, the prices of the orders depending on the costs of inserting the customer in the tour or for his removal. According to a proposed rule set, the financial market creates a buy-and-sell graph for the various orders in the order book, intending to optimize the overall system. Here I present a thorough investigation for the application of this algorithm to the traveling salesman problem.
Diffusive Behavior and the Modeling of Characteristic Times in Limit Order Executions
2007
We present a study of the order book data of the London Stock Exchange for five highly liquid stocks traded during the calendar year 2002. Specifically, we study the first passage time of order book prices needed to observe a prescribed price change Delta, the time to fill (TTF) for executed limit orders and the time to cancel (TTC) for canceled ones. We find that the distribution of the first passage time decays asymptotically in time as a power law with an exponent L_FPT ~ 1.5. The median of the same quantity scales as Delta^1.6, which is different from the Delta^2 behavior expected for Brownian motion. The quantities TTF, and TTC are also asymptotically power law distributed with exponen…
THE KEY ROLE OF LIQUIDITY FLUCTUATIONS IN DETERMINING LARGE PRICE CHANGES
2005
Recent empirical analyses have shown that liquidity fluctuations are important for understanding large price changes of financial assets. These liquidity fluctuations are quantified by gaps in the order book, corresponding to blocks of adjacent price levels containing no quotes. Here we study the statistical properties of the state of the limit order book for 16 stocks traded at the London Stock Exchange (LSE). We show that the time series of the first three gaps are characterized by fat tails in the probability distribution and are described by long memory processes.
