Evolution and functional differentiation of recently diverged phytochelatin synthase genes from Arundo donax L.

Plant phytochelatin synthases undergo evolutionarily rapid functional differentiation after duplication, allowing fast and precise adjustment of metal detoxification capacity by modulation of both transcription and enzymatic activity.

Botanical drawings of Angelina Damiani Lanza (1879 - 1936). The drawings of Sicilian plants made by Ange- lina Damiani are reported and commented. After a brief presentation of the author’s personality, the technique used in the drawings is examined, together with the relevant value from the artistic and botanical point of view. This material, mainly consisting of pencil drawings gathered in an album recently donated to the Director of the Palermo Botanical Garden, sin- ce 2006 is exhibited in the small historical museum set up in one of the halls of the monumental Gymnasium of the same Botanical Garden. Understanding the physiological responses of intertidal seaweeds to environmental factors is fundamental to characterize their local physiological adaptation and success in the face of climate change. We measured the photosynthetic activity and the total phenolic content of the intertidal alga Cystoseira compressa and explored their relationship with latitude or local ambient air and seawater temperatures. Our results show that, when submerged, the photosynthetic activity of C. compressa showed values typical for non-stressed thalli, and the seawater temperatures found across sites explained the variability of these values. Mediterranean plantations are the most suitable areas to assess vegetation dynamics and competitive interactions between native and exotic woody species. Our research was carried out in a coastal pine plantation (Sicily) where renaturalization by native species (Pistacia lentiscus L. and Olea europaea var. sylvestris) and invasion by Acacia saligna (Labill.) H.L.Wendl. simultaneously occur. The regeneration pattern of woody species in the pine understory was evaluated in six experimental plots along a stand density gradient, from 200 to approximately 700 pines per hectare.
