Averages of $b$-hadron, $c$-hadron, and $\tau$-lepton properties as of summer 2016

2017

This article reports world averages of measurements of $b$-hadron, $c$-hadron, and $\tau$-lepton properties obtained by the Heavy Flavor Averaging Group using results available through summer 2016. For the averaging, common input parameters used in the various analyses are adjusted (rescaled) to common values, and known correlations are taken into account. The averages include branching fractions, lifetimes, neutral meson mixing parameters, \CP~violation parameters, parameters of semileptonic decays and CKM matrix elements.

The evolved pulsating CEMP star HD112869

2015

Radial velocity measurements, $BVR_C$ photometry, and high-resolution spectroscopy in the wavelength region from blue to near infrared are employed in order to clarify the evolutionary status of the carbon-enhanced metal-poor star HD112869 with unique ratio of carbon isotopes in the atmosphere. An LTE abundance analysis was carried out using the method of spectral synthesis and new self consistent 1D atmospheric models. The radial velocity monitoring confirmed semiregular variations with a peak-to-peak amplitude of about 10 km $s^{-1}$ and a dominating period of about 115 days. The light, color and radial velocity variations are typical of the evolved pulsating stars. The atmosphere of HD11…

Spectroscopy of red giants in the open clusters NGC 1545 and Tr2

2011

The results of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) abundance analysis are presented for four red giants in the fields of open clusters NGC 1545 and Tr2. The membership of HD 27276, HD 27292 and HD 16068 was confirmed and the age of NGC 1545 was updated: log  age(yr) = 7.95. A mild deficiency of iron-group elements was found on average for NGC 1545 and Tr2, [Fe/H]=−0.13 and −0.07 with an uncertainty of about 0.08 dex. Oxygen and carbon are moderately depleted in all cluster giants, [O/Fe]=−0.23 ± 0.05 dex and [C/Fe]=−0.56 ± 0.07 dex on average. Nitrogen is enhanced, [N/Fe] values in range +0.4 to +1.2 dex, and lithium depleted. Sodium is slightly enhanced, [Na/Fe]=+0.26 ± 0.04 dex on avera…

DISK REFLECTION SIGNATURES IN THE SPECTRUM OF THE BRIGHT Z-SOURCE GX 340+0

2008

We present the preliminary results of a 50 ks long XMM-Newton observation of the bright Z-source GX 340+0. In this Letter we focus on the study of a broad asymmetric emission line in the Fe K alpha energy band, whose shape is clearly resolved and compatible with a relativistically smeared profile arising from reflection on a hot accretion disk extending close to the central accreting neutron star. By combining temporal and spectral analysis, we are able to follow the evolution of the source along its Horizontal Branch. However, despite a significant change in the continuum emission and luminosity, the line profile does not show any strong correlated variation. This broad line is produced by…

Thermal duality and thermodynamics of micro black holes

2015

Starting from a generalized black hole entropy with logarithmic area corrections, in this paper we obtain (for positive value of the coefficient of the correction term) a generalized equation of state for black holes with two dual branches. In one of them (the usual one for macro black holes) T ≃ 1/M, with T temperature and M mass. In the other one, for micro black holes, instead, T ≃ M. We compare the equilibrium and stability between macro black holes and electromagnetic radiation in a finite box with reflecting walls, with the dual situation corresponding to micro black holes and cosmic string loops, also in a finite box. In this model, the dual phenomenon of evaporation of unstable mac…

On the Spectral Evolution of Cygnus X-2 along its Color-Color Diagram

2002

We report on the results of a broad band (0.1-200 keV) spectral study of Cyg X-2 using two BeppoSAX observations taken in 1996 and 1997, respectively, for a total effective on-source time of ~100 ks. The color-color (CD) and hardness-intensity (HID) diagrams show that the source was in the horizontal branch (HB) and normal branch (NB) during the 1996 and 1997 observation, respectively. Five spectra were selected around different positions of the source in the CD/HID, two in the HB and three in the NB. These spectra are fit to a model consisting of a disk blackbody, a Comptonization component, and two Gaussian emission lines at ~1 keV and ~6.6 keV, respectively. The addition of a hard power-…

On metal-deficient barium stars and their link with yellow symbiotic stars

2005

This paper addresses the question of why metal-deficient barium stars are not yellow symbiotic stars (YSyS). Samples of (suspected) metal-deficient barium (mdBa) stars and YSyS have been collected from the literature, and their properties reviewed. It appears in particular that the barium nature of the suspected mdBa stars needs to be ascertained by detailed abundance analyses. Abundances are therefore derived for two of them, HD 139409 and HD 148897, which reveal that HD 148897 should not be considered a barium star. HD 139409 is a mild barium star, with overabundances observed only for elements belonging to the first s-process peak (Y and Zr). The evidence for binarity among mdBa stars is…

Patterns of variability in Be/X-ray pulsars during giant outbursts

2012

The discovery of source states in the X-ray emission of black-hole binaries and neutron-star low-mass X-ray binaries constituted a major step forward in the understanding of the physics of accretion onto compact objects. While there are numerous studies on the correlated timing and spectral variability of these systems, very little work has been done on high-mass X-ray binaries, the third major type of X-ray binaries. The main goal of this work is to investigate whether Be accreting X-ray pulsars display source states and characterise those states through their spectral and timing properties. We have made a systematic study of the power spectra, energy spectra and X-ray hardness-intensity d…

Black hole formation from a null fluid in extended Palatini gravity

2012

We study the formation and perturbation of black holes by null fluxes of neutral matter in a quadratic extension of General Relativity formulated a la Palatini. Working in a spherically symmetric space-time, we obtain an exact analytical solution for the metric that extends the usual Vaidya-type solution to this type of theories. We find that the resulting space-time is formally that of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole but with an effective charge term carrying the wrong sign in front of it. This effective charge is directly related to the luminosity function of the radiation stream. When the ingoing flux vanishes, the charge term disappears and the space-time relaxes to that of a Schwarzsch…

A search for diffuse absorption bands in carbon-rich stars -- I. Barium and related stars

2003

The results of a search for interstellar and circumstellar absorption lines in high-resolution optical spectra of seven late-type stars are presented. All these stars are single-lined spectroscopic binaries with unseen companions, presumably white dwarfs. Some residual material indicative of recent mass transfer from an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star might still be associated with the systems. Peculiar energy distribution and the sodium D 1 and D 2 lines give direct evidence about the material in the line of sight in some cases. Absorption features of simple carbon-bearing molecules (C 2 , CN) have been detected in most of the examined stars, confirming a carbon-rich nature of the corre…
