Evidence of stochastic resonance in the mating behavior of Nezara viridula (L.)

We investigate the role of the noise in the mating behavior between individuals of Nezara viridula (L.), by analyzing the temporal and spectral features of the non-pulsed type female calling song emitted by single individuals. We have measured the threshold level for the signal detection, by performing experiments with the calling signal at different intensities and analyzing the insect response by directionality tests performed on a group of male individuals. By using a sub-threshold signal and an acoustic Gaussian noise source, we have investigated the insect response for different levels of noise, finding behavioral activation for suitable noise intensities. The aim of this study was to focus on interspecific variation of total phenolic contents (TPC) in temperate brown algae also considering their relationship with environmental conditions. In particular, we compared the TPC of four species characterized by different thallus morphology, growth cycle and bathymetric level: Cystoseira amentacea (C. Agardh) Bory, Cystoseira compressa (Esper) Gerloff & Nizamuddin, Dictyopteris polypodioides (A.P. De Candolle) J.V. Lamouroux and Padina pavonica (Linnaeus) Thivy, collected in summer 2011 from the north-western coast of Sicily.

International audience; The aim of this study was to monitor the changes in the properties of palm sugar syrup produced by an open pan and a vacuum evaporator at 70°C and 80°C during storage under 4°C and room temperature (30°C) for 12 months at monthly intervals. During storage, Maillard reaction took place in samples stored under 4°C lower than those stored under 30°C. This was shown by lower a* values, intermediate browning products (IBP), browning intensity (BI) and HMF content, and higher L* values, fructose, glucose and free amino group contents during storage for 12 months. The enigmatic young brown dwarf binary FU Tau: accretion and activity

FU Tau belongs to a rare class of young, wide brown dwarf binaries. We have resolved the system in a Chandra X-ray observation and detected only the primary, FU Tau A. Hard X-ray emission, presumably from a corona, is present but, unexpectedly, we detect also a strong and unusually soft component from FU Tau A. Its X-ray properties, so far unique among brown dwarfs, are very similar to those of the T Tauri star TW Hya. The analogy with TW Hya suggests that the dominating soft X-ray component can be explained by emission from accretion shocks.
